In an effort to eat healthy food, we stayed away from Real Texas Bar-B-Q for quite a long time. On July 6, 2002 we decided to treat ourselves and get some of the beef ribs to go. The prices went up a little, but the quality went down a lot. The ribs we got were full of fat, and the meat that was on them tasted salty. We don't know if there has been a change in ownership, or just in the supplier and/or the process or what, but we couldn't let our previous review stand without further comment. The only good thing to come of this change is that now while we're eating healthy we won't feel that we're keeping ourselves away from those really good ribs.

Good
Randy says: The beef ribs are of unbelievably excellent quality. They're generally meaty, although one or two times they weren't as meaty as usual. They're cooked in a nice sauce.

Jeff says: These are the best beef ribs, hands down, in San Diego. They're tender and flavorful.

Randy says: The Caesar salad is good but the dressing is very garlicky so I get it on the side.

Jeff says: I'd rather eat the Caesar salad, with its springy romaine lettuce and shaved parmesan cheese dry than with the tangy yellow dressing it comes with. For sides I like the macaroni salad and the potato salad. The macaroni salad is passable but a little too vinegary for my taste, and the potato salad is a little sweet but I like it.

Randy says: I wasn't impressed with the sides. The iced tea is undrinkable.

Jeff says: The iced tea is abominable. With the meals come buttered buns, like hamburger buns. They're basically grease sponges, but that doesn't stop me from eating them.

Real Texas Bar-B-Q is the place to go for ribs, or rather the place to get ribs to go or have them delivered from. Set in a dingy industrial area, the place is a dump inside with a big screen TV often tuned to sports. There is a fairly extensive menu which we have not tried because we first came for beef ribs, and we liked them so much we can't return without going for the ribs again. There is no comparison to places like Tony Roma's, where the ribs are all fat covered in sauce. According to the menu, the secret is in the freshness of the ribs (cryovac packed and delivered daily), and the cooking process (special barbecue pits cooking at a low temperature for 20 to 30 hours, alternating between heat and smoke from mesquite and green oak logs). The result is ribs so good they more than make up for the location, atmosphere, and accompaniments.
