Randy and Jeff met in August, 1991 on a computer bulletin board. After 5 years as a couple living separately, we purchased a home and moved in together in October, 1996.
Being a same-sex couple in the United States, we had no legal relationship until February 1, 2000, when we acted under a new law that let us register as Domestic Partners in the state of California. While this does not grant us any of the 1,000 automatic benefits of marriage in the United States, it is so far the only way we can get any kind of legal recognition of our relationship on file with a government entity.
