If it is reporting an MX lokup failure then it has not got as far as trying
to connect to the remote system.

You could do a similar test by hand ....
drop to command prompt - then
nslookup
set type=mx
ralphs.com
quit

then compare that output with one that you know works.

Hello to everyone who responded to my problem!
(Ben Saren, Paul Webster, Lasse Gustafsson and Patrick)

Thank you all for taking your time to respond, after reading all tipps, I
was able to isolate the problem.

By using nslookup I noticed, that the "A" type record of the destination
email servers were missing, therefore our email server simply couldn't get
the IP address of them.

So, what I learned from this incidient is, that

#1. an email server has to have "MX" record on the DNS server(s)
#2. The MX record IS NOT ENOUGH, the "A" record of the Email server also
has to be there.

Since this morning one of our clients has already corrected this problem,
and Voila, we have no more problem with sending emails to them.

Thanks again to every one of you!

Geza

I am new to this list so I'm sorry if this ground has been covered already.
I am running Worldmail 2.0 on a server at the University of Pennsylvania. I
recently added in some message relay restrictions
(128.91.0.0-165.123.255.255) but now I cannot send email from a worldmail
based email accounts to a upenn email account. Any thoughts on how I might
resolve this?

Amy,

It's a pain in the butt! None of your aliases will work once you add relay
restrictions. They will all have to be changed to distribution lists. I
don't know if that's what you are talking about. Are these e-mail
forwarding aliases?

Hi all:

My apologies. I meant to write in my original message that I have
restricted all other IPs except the range (128.91.0.0 - 165.123.255.255) -
i.e., everything outside of campus.

Here's an example of the problem. Email acct user at hamilton.house.upenn dot edu
cannot send a message to user at pobox.upenn dot edu. The user at hamilton dot house is a
message store user, not an alias. Does that make sense? The error message
that I get is "cannot send to user at pobox.upenn dot edu. Message relaying not
allowed."

Thanks!
Amy

For the past week I've been having a lot of connections under Server

few outgoing.

I only had these once and it was a while back. Why?

Hi,

After being recently attacked by a trojan horse I've been trying to close
down all vulnerable ports. It seems no matter what combination of ports I
leave open (pop3, smtp, imap, eudora auto-config, etc.) the worldmail server
will not relay email. If I take all restrictions off and leave all ports
open it works fine.

Does worldmail dynamically create ports is the some simple solution to this
problem? Any help would be appreciated...Jarod

This is a stupid question that all you mail giants out there will laugh at.

How do we get worldmail to send an error back to someone who sends email to
an address that doesn't exist? The only thing I see like that to configure
is "delayed" messages.

Well, not really, because the answer or better said the solution is quite
stupid as well:

Make sure that you do not create and assign an "Undeliverable" or similar
function mailbox for undeliverable emails, this is the only thing that can
and will trigger a default "no recepient" message back to the sender.

I also have the message expiration section set to 1 hour and 4 hours, this
way our users receive a delay message after 1 hour and expiration message
after 4 hours.
This was important for us because our business can not allow waiting for 24
hours to find out that the destination email address is invalid or their
email server is down.

Umm... if there is stupidity, I think it might reside in Worldmail. See
below.

=46or each domain, go into Configure / Domain / General, and under "Where
 to
forward undeliverable mail", first make sure that the "Mailbox" radio
button
is highlighted and second make sure that the "E-mail address" box is
-blank-.

You can apparently send the bounce messages back to the sender, or you
can
choose to send the original messages to a new address of your choosing,
but
you cannot choose for both to happen.

When you're done, the "Mailbox" disposition will still be highlighted,
even
though the bounces won't be directed to any mailbox.

And if that doesn't solve the problem, then... <insert shoulder shrug
here>.

well... this is (and has been) blank. the postmaster acct was set to send
mail to my email box, but it doesn't. I tried to delete that address but
wm says there has to be an address there.

could this have something to do with us having gateways in place? We have
one scanning mail internally and one scanning mail externally.

Could well be because of gateways. If you have configured a gateway in
Worldmail then it basically means that the gateway will handle the mail for
this domain ... so it gets routed there ... on the assumption that the
gateway will handle addresses that it does not know about by sending back
non-delivery (etc) to the orginator.

Do any of you know anything about this?

Here is the latest on this issue if you have any more ideas. Perhaps focus
on teh second error message as we seem to have exhausted the first:

Immediately after reboot, Internet Service for WorldMail 2.0 does not start.
The message says to check the event viewer for details, however, the event
viewer does not indicate any errors. about 15 minutes after reboot, I gett
the two errors in the event viewer:

"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
atapi, dac2nt4, dac960nt, Mouclass"

and

cannot bind socket to port 25 error 10048 (for Source WorldMail)

After these two errors, I'm able to connect to the Internet Service, however
no mail goes through. All other service seem to be running fine.

According to my server tech support:

ATAPI only starts when using IDE or EIDE drives and your server has SCSI
drive. The dac entries are drivers that help run RAID controllers and you
have stand alone. Further the Mouclass only indicates that a mouse was not
plugged in at the time of startup. Since you have a racked server this is to
be expected.

One more thing and this may be related to my problems. It seems my server
is beign used to relay junk mail. Lots of mail going through the logs. At
one time I had it set up to block message relaying, however I just reloading
everything and have forgotten how. Could someoen remind me?

Subject: Over sensitivity for lack of MX record

Hello again!

Couple weeks ago I posted a message and in it I indicated that we have
problem sending emails to a few client of ours, and it turned out that the
problem was(still is) that either the MX record of the destination email
addresses were missing from their DNS records or just the "A" type record
of the email servers.

Now what is still puzzling to me is that these firms have problem receiving
emails ONLY from US!!!

So, why our Worldmail server is sooo sensitive for the lack of MX or A
record of other internet domains, while others' is not?

For example this domain has an MX record, but no A record:
ibaeng.com
and they claim, that they don't have any problem receiving emails from
anyone but from us.

Or here is another domain:
relystaff.com
they don't have MX nor A record in the DNS and still I just spoke with
someone at that firm and they are not complaining any email email problems.

Any ideas about why Our worldmail server is so MX and A record sensitive?
Or better said: Why other email servers ARE NOT so sensitive and can
deliver emails if the main domain server is available and visible?

Geza

The Worldmail implementation tries really hard to follow the RFCs.
There is a work-around available - using the Custom Domain mechanism.
The basic premise was that the remote configuration is "wrong" - so
highlight it.

relystaff.com - you are right - there is no MX record.
As I remember it .. the RFCs allow for direct addressing ... and a host
"relystaff.com" responds on port 25 ... so it is being addressed directly
since there is no MX record.

What is the attachment's file extension? Is the attachment in the 7.3
format? Are the client's using Outlook? If they are using Outlook, it
could be that the clients that cannot read the attachment are being blocked
because of Service Pack 2.

4.2.0.58. True on both machine that can't and the machine that can.

MM.exe is the management center (ManageMent).

One way to make that version crash is to run on Win2K and use the feature
hat makes the top menu change dynamically when you click on the different
lower sections (at least that is dragging it back from ancient memory).

What does it say in the logs?
Have you tried ISOTRACE?
What happens if you use the built-in DNS checker?

My problem seems to come from my "Reverse DNS entries for MX records" is
not set up.

How and where can I set up a reverse DNS ?

DNS problem can be fixed only by your ISP.

Based on dns lookup, you might want to give a call to the support at
oleane.net.

ns0.oleane.net. [194.2.0.30 (NO GLUE)]
ns1.oleane.net. [194.2.0.60 (NO GLUE)]

check out your DNS records here:
http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=praxim.fr
Here you can check all of your DNS records.
http://www.dnsreport.com
Based on my recent observation, 7 or 8 out of 10 domains have some kind of
DNS record errors.

Subject: IMS Keeps Crashing
Date: Fri, 15 Nov 2002 16:56:04 -0800

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Starting today, IMS (the Interenet Message Store) service has been crashing
quite frequently. For a while it was approx. every 5 minutes, than it
stopped for a couple hours and crashed a couple more times.

It's running on Windows NT 4 SP 6. The only thing I noticed was that within
about 15 seconds before it would crash, spam was trying to be sent to a
non-existant account.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

-Matt

Hello.

I was wondering how I can change the name of a local domain in WorldMail?

Basically, I want to change company.com to c0mpany.com.

Is this done in the registry?

Thanks,

Case is not sensitive when handling domain names - so ... you can make this
change at the desktop clients - simply put in the domain name that you want
in the senders desktop profile.

[by default there is no checking of the domain name at all for outbound
mail]

Subject: Unable to backup the Server config?
Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 09:55:41 +1100

Hi all

I'm in the position of needing to do a fresh install of Win2K on my mail
server (Bloody hackers) and so am trying to follow the instructions for
backing up the worldmail 2.0 configuration using the "nibl -e -p Domain -f
wmconfig.txt" command, as found in help document 1420HQ.
If I enter the wrong read password the program completes and leaves a 0Kb
file (as expected) but if I enter the correct password it sits for a couple
of minutes then gives an "Abnormal Program Termination" error, again leaving
a 0Kb file. Is there anything I can do to fix this or alternatively is there
a manual way to backup the config and registry entries needed to restore the
server to it's current glory after the OS rebuild?

My guess is that there is something about the encoding of that message that
is not being handled properly by IMS.
You could stop IMS wait for a few messages to come in ... copy them away
somewhere ... restart IMS ... and then drop fed in the messages until it
crashes again ... then you would know which message it was and we could have
a look at it to try to spot what is causing the problem.
However, I doubt that it will be fixable [given the code is frozen] - but it
might be possible to find a way to block it in future.

Hello,

I have been having the same problem with a few destination, what I do first
is that check their domain name on this website:

http://www.dnsreport.com/

...to see if there is any DNS record problem there. 99 out of 100 case
shows that there is a problem with the MX record of their email server.
Sometimes the whole MX record is missing, sometimes the name is there but
the "A" record is missing, plus the reverse lookup fails because of that,
that's why your email server will not trust the destination's email server.

I would check this first, but first of all why don't you run this check on
your own domain name, you might get surprised, that your own domain is also
suffering from DNS problem.

In any case, the person who is in charge of the DNS server configuration
(in most cases the ISP of the destination email server) is the one who can
fix this problem in couple of minutes.

Geza

P.s.: of course you will always see bunch of junkmail sitting in your que,
they are mainly returned emails from unknown email addresses. I would not
worry about those.

See Document ID: 1236HQ at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1236hq.html

"If WorldMail is able to resolve hostnames, verify the MX record of the
domain that is not being sent. If the MX record points to a Cname, this is
contrary to RFC 1912, http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1912.txt, and may not work
with most mail servers, including WorldMail."

The only solution is to do the rotation manually!!! Has anyone had this

I thought that NIBL should be reversible - i.e. export file=import file
If that is the case - then ... create an Alias and do a NIBL export and see
how it gets presented. Your syntax looks right anyway.

I just didn't want to do an export/import of the whole config file, just
want to import the aliases needed to append to the user list.

Subject: Nibl/smtpd/imsd password mystery solved!
Date: Sat, 01 Feb 2003 01:24:19 -0800

I've had Worldmail installed for about six years.

=46or about four years, the NIBL program has been demanding unknown
passwords,
and has as a result been unuseable.

I have reset the passwords numerous times, via SMTPD and IMSD, per
www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/889hq.html, to no avail.

Turns out:

You -must- run smtpd and imsd from a Windows MSDOS Shell, or from Start
Menu/Run. They must not be run from any other kind of command prompt.
Otherwise, the programs silently do nothing. But nibl itself can be run
from
any context.

(I ran into another program that was kind enough to emit an error message
when run from a non-DOS shell, and a light bulb went on in my head.)

Lord knows the special shell call-backs these programs might be using.
The
other program's error related to CoCreateInstance(), an OLE function.
Hard to
say what it was actually trying to do.

Hope Qualcomm decides to support Worldmail again someday. It's been five
years now.

And I hope this message helps someone, someday -

Depending which way you go, you pay beaucoup bucks for a
smtp/imap/pop3 server.

I am looking into Postfix/Cyrus in Linux and Imail for Windows to
replace our worldmail. the first one is free the second one not. We
didn't even consider about Exchange or Lotus, they are big all the way
around you look at.

The price yo upay for opensource could be cheap almost free to a few
hundred $ mainly for maintenance and updates.

I've never tried IMAP or LDAP.

Unfortunately, mail servers have gone way up in price, although
there's nothing intrinsically very complicated about a mail server.
The audience is businesses, not home users, and they can get the
price.

Subject: Web interface to Worldmail mailing lists?
Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 21:14:03 -0800

Hi --

I'm about to write the CGI (Perl script or something) to implement a
simple
web interface to Worldmail's add/remove mailing list functions.

But before I reinvent the wheel: has anyone already put an HTML front end
onto Worldmail's mailing lists?

thanks --

Garry

PS - The authors of Worldmail were kind enough to build in a whole
command
language for talking to Worldmail. Makes it easy.

Can anyone tell me where this API is documented?

Subject: Worldmail & Norton Antivirus

We have this problem where Norton Antivirus will find an email with an
attached virus in a users mailbox folder. It will try to repair it, and
then quarantine it. I'm getting an access denied error from that mailbox.
It looks like the worldmail server service has full rights to that file and
can not be removed from that directory until the user pulls it down via
their mail client. Is there any way to give access to NAV to remove these
viruses? The mailbox folders have everyone as full rights and it still will
not give access to the file.

OS: NT server 4.0
Worldmail v 2.0
NAV 2001.

Thanks, Trevor

I'm on the road and away from my Worldmail server machine but, in lieu of
anyone else answering, I'll give it a try from memory... Go to Start Menu
 /
Programs / Worldmail and look for the button for the online "Dynatext"
help
manual for Worldmail. Within that, look at the appendices that define the
various Worldmail TCP interface protocols, and look for the one for the
Manager.

Hope this helps.

Subject: WorldMail and SpamAssassin

I'd like to be able to add spam filtering to WorldMail (SpamAssassin is
what I have in mind), and am willing to do a little programming to get it
going. One option would be to add a proxy server that intercepts the mail
before it gets to WorldMail, but we already have one proxy there for virus
scanning (McAfee SMTP Scan). There is a proxy available with SpamAssassin,
but it is a contributed program written to run on Unix for a small
workgroup. I've managed to modify it to run on Windows, I am not confident
that it will be reliable under the load that we will put on it. And I'm not
entirely happy with the idea of a growing chain of proxies handling e-mail.
In my previous post, I was hoping for docs on an API that would allow me to
set up another service that would communicate with WorldMail, getting
incoming mail, processing it through SpamAssassin, then handing it back to
WorldMail.

If anyone has any relevant experience to share, I would appreciate it.
Moving to another Windows mail server is not an option - our budget is
being drastically cut (we are a state agency and are affected by the
current revenue crisis). My options, given the $0 budget, seem to be either
to make something work with WorldMail, or move to all Open Source stuff on
Linux. If I do make this work with WorldMail, I'd be happy to post details
to the list, if there is any interest.
