Subject: bogus errno returns in popper.c::myfgets()

I have been trying to track down some sort of bug that clients are
causing in qpopper at seemingly random instances. There is no
discernable pattern to them that I can see.

This is 3.1.2 code.

The errors look like this:

        EOF from at 10.20.11.79 (this.host.our.domain.tld): [0] 29
        (Illegal seek); 0 (Success) [popper.c:337]

The error is *not* always an `illegal seek'; it is often times a `no
such file or directory' and can contain other errors as well, but these
are the most common.

Notice the subsequent interpretation of the error on the stream: Success.

The problem is in myfgets():

    while ( --size > 0 ) {
        if ( ( nbytes = read ( fileno(fp), cp, 1 ) ) <= 0 )
            break;

        if ( *cp == '\n' ) {
            *++cp = '\0';
            found_nl++;
            break;
        }
        ++cp;
    }

    if ( ( nbytes <= 0 ) || ( cp == str ) ) {
        if ( nbytes == 0 ) {
            pop_log ( p, POP_NOTICE, HERE, "EOF from %s at %s (%s): "
                      "[%i] %i (%s); %d (%s)",
                      p->user, p->ipaddr, p->client,$
                      nbytes, errno, STRERROR(errno),
                      ferror(fp), STRERROR(ferror(fp)) );

Notice how streams are used to handle the files, but system calls are
used rather than high-level stream routines! Well that was strange (why
use the streams at all if you are going to do descriptor-based IO?) but
you'll notice that `errno' and its perror() interpretation is printed,
followed by the streams-equivalents.

This is where the strange, inconsistent error messages are coming from.
The problem is that errno should only be used if read() has returned a
`-1', and ferror() should probably never be used (there anyways) since
the IO we're doing is low-level, FD based. Now since read() returned 0
(EOF), errno can be set at the time of the strerror() call to be any
random memory contents, because there was no error condition. Read did
not set the errno itself, because there was no error that occurred. I
do not think that C defines all routines that could modify errno first
modifiy it to be `0' when entering the function.

So we are returning errno values and passing them to strerror, when
errno probably got defined before by some completely, unrelated routing,
probably in setup code for the C library.

This code is bogus and needs to be removed because it is leading people
(like me) on wild goose chases trying to figure out what file is "no
such file or directory" or what is "invalid seek." Probably to get rid
of errno/strerror/ferror altogether and just note that an EOF occurred.

That leads me to my question: why do so many clients return EOF so
often? These are mostly Outlook, MailMan and Netscape that generate
these, and it's a fast local LAN.

Do these clients simply close the connection without doing a `quit'?
Anyone else get these?

CCing qpopper at qualcomm dot com in case they handle `bug reports'; this one
is definitely a bug since the errno values are completely unrelated to
any possible error condition in this code path.

Generally, if you've got heavy demand for POP3, configure for standalone
as this avoids the start-up costs for the process. If you've got
infrequent demand, just run from [x]inetd.

I've actually wondered about this, the FAQ or README does not state this
point. I wonder why forking from inetd vs. qpopper forking itself would
offer a major performance gain? Server mode on the other hand may offer
more performance gain depending on the users activities...

what is "heavy demand"?
I have about 100 - 200 connection / minute and xinetd has no problem with
the connection but qpopper seems to eat up my cpu-time when processing the
mails:(
so standalone-mode will not help i guess.

did you make any experiances?
for how many connections standalon-mode is usefull?

<snip from INSTALL>

While standalone mode may offer better performance than using inetd,
be aware that you may lose capabilities such as load throttling,
address filtering, etc.

<mailto:qpopper at qualcomm dot com>. Try to use a very specific 'Subject'
or your message may get lost in the noise. (There are always a lot
of messages that all have the subject "Question" or "help" or
"Qpopper" or even no 'Subject' at all, and it is hard to spot new

We running about 1700 users on a PII 500 with 512M RAM running RH 6.0 (I
think, been a while since I was at the console). Lately, it has started
spooling out of control during peak hours. Last night, it had 325 popper
requests (we normally max at 20) and 75 zombies. I've upgraded the system
to 3.1, but it hasn't fixed the problem. These are the options I
configured with:

./configure --enable-specialauth --enable-temp-drop-dir=/var/spool/poptemp
--enable-debugging --enable-servermode --enable-shy --with-log-facility=LOG_LOCAL0
--enable-timing

I've started to see these types of messages in the local0log:
#tail -f local0log | egrep -B 1 '\<clean=[1-9]\>'
Nov 14 14:17:58 brazos popper[17409]: Stats: osg 0 0 509 4448005

Can anyone see anything I've misconfigured? Can you explain why one pop
gives an error and the other shows normal? Can you recommend anything to
fix this problem? It may not be a qpopper issue, but it seems to be the
guilty party as it has the highest number of process requests and zombies
when the system starts to die.

Thanks for the assist,

The "(error)" versus "(normal)" refers to how the session ended.
If the connections aborts, or the client just shuts down the
connection without sending "quit", Qpopper reports this as an error.

If you're seeing zombie processes when Qpopper is run from inetd
(as opposed to standalone mode) then I suspect a problem with
inetd. I'm not aware of anything Qpopper can do to cause or avoid
zombie processes when it is forked by inetd.

Subject: qpopper 3.1.2 and custom hash spool

Hi,

i'm new to this list, so i don't know if this has been brought up
already :)

we use a custom hashed spool for the mailboxes on our pop3 server.
it looks something like this:
/some/path/box/00
/some/path/box/01
...
/some/path/box/FF

sendmail gives the incoming mails to procmail, procmail puts mail for
each account in /some/path/box/??/account

the current mailserver is an old qpopepr 2.something.
and has been patched by people who have left the compant a long time
ago.

patches include:
radius authentication
custom hash :)
pop before smtp

the only thing i can't get done is the custom hash. (this is what's
keeping us from upgrading at the moment)
my C knowledge isn't good enough <g>

i think only two files should be changed (popper/pop_dropcopy.c and
common/genpath.c), but i'm not really sure, and i would really
appreciate some help here.

if someone needs the source for the patched OLD version, i can supply
them, but it looks like the code between version 2 and 3 has changed a
little, so i doubt the copy and paste way isn't going to work.

best regards,
and thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Jurgen.

Subject: qpopper + apop

Hi,

Sorry if this has already been covered but i'm a complete newbie to
all this and need help in getting qpopper + Apop to work with Qmail.

qpopper installed okay, i added the following to tcpserver :

tcpserver -v -R 0 pop3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup mail.mydomain.co.uk /b
in/checkpassword /usr/local/bin/popper ip_of_mailserver -S &

i did a popauth -init
and then popauth -user username, typed password

it seems to add it to the pop.auth db.

Now everytime i try to collect mail using apop it gives an
authorisation error.

The email client i'm using is The Bat, i've also tried using Eudora..,

To install apop i used the following :

./configure --enable-apop=/etc/pop.auth --with-popuid=pop
--enable-standalone

I've a feeling i'm doing something really stupid... but don't know
what, any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Wasim

What if it is running in standalone and is still leaving zombies? This
is the behavior I am seeing under FreeBSD and the latest release of
Qpopper.

Are you seeing zombie processes in standalone mode on BSD with
Qpopper 3.1.2? I couldn't get 3.1.2 to create zombies, so if you
can, please let me know. Make sure it's 3.1.2, not anything earlier.

Subject: qpopper standalone..

Okay, I'm still pretty much a Linux newbie...

I've been having weird problems with qpopper apparently not starting up when I access it from my local network.
Possibly/probably an inetd problem.

Workaround seemed to be to set it up with --enable-standalone. I did this.

I've even got it running... but only if I'm logged in as root.

I assume that I need to create a script to stick in /etc/rc.d/init.d to link to from /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

Confession: I don't do shell scripts (and right now I don't have time to learn).

I've looked at other scripts in there, and it seems like they are using a howitzer for a flyswatter simply to launch a program.

Is there another way of doing this? Or does anyone already have the script files needed? The Snn prior to the program's name in
rc5.d is a bit elusive... I know the S is for start... but what's with the numbers? I've glanced through the man pages for inittab, but
didn't see anything specific.

Thanks!

Subject: Maildir help

 Help a newbie !!

I've compiled qpopper using the following :

 ./configure --enable-apop=/etc/pop.auth --with-popuid=pop --enable-home-dir-mail=Maildir

my inetd file looks like this :

pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/bin/popper qpopper -s

I'm using the Bat to pick up mail using apop authentication...,

the program authenticates properly, but doesn't pick up any email,
even though mail is stored under Maildir/new.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Wasim

Hey, Jack,

Try

chmod 1777 /var/spool/mail

see if that fixes it. Apparently, neither UID 501 nor GID 12 can create a
file in the directory /var/spool/mail.

In the error I say sys/temp, and I also saw jack.pop as the file name, would
this still work ?
I have another box running qpopper and everything looks the same, yet this box
doesn't run. should I change rights in sys/temp ? what about the reference to
jack.pop, the real pop file is jack.......

Thanks for you help!

We were running 3.1. I didn't see anything about this issue in the
Changes file in 3.1.2 so I didn't think it had been addressed. I guess
it has, because we are running fine now.

Thanks again,

Subject: Compile problems with --enable-apop

I am trying to implement the current qpopper version on a
Mandrake 7.2 Linux system (custom 2.2.17 kernel from kernel.org) and
qmail 1.03. I am using the "Mailbox" mbox file in the users' home
directories instead of /var/spool/mail/, I am using shadow passwords, and
I want to implement APOP.

	Here is my configure command:

./configure \
--enable-home-dir-mail=Mailbox
--enable-specialauth
--enable-apop=etc/qpopper.auth
--with-popuid=pop

Note that the "pop" user exists in /etc/passwd...

When I "make" after having set any options that include
--enable-apop, things fall apart, like so:

gcc -c -I.. -I.. -I. \
        -I../mmangle -I../common \
        -g -O2 -fpcc-struct-return -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DLINUX -DUNIX

Am I using the configure options incorrectly? It compiles fine as

The "[sys/temp]" is a POP3 extended response code. It tells the
client that the error is a system-related error, perhaps of a
temporary nature. This lets clients know that it is not a case of
a bad password, for example.

For your specific problem, see the FAQ entry

try adding -lxnet or -lbind (preferred; from named)

Thank You very much
I had added to Makefile -lbind and
this have solved my problem :-)

The compilation has gone well and and qopper works

If you enable standalone mode, you must run Qpopper directly (not
through inetd or similar program). If you want to have Qpopper
launched by inetd (or whatever) when connections come in, don't use
standalone mode.

If you telnet in to port 110 (or whichever port you've assigned to
it) do you see the Qpopper banner? Does it have an APOP challenge
(a string enclosed in angle brackets)?

I did a diff of the two Makefiles that were generated:

< DBM_LIBS =
< LIBS = -lresolv -lcrypt
---
> DBM_LIBS = -lndbm
> LIBS = -lresolv -lndbm -lcrypt

The top one is for the good compile, and the bottom oneis for the
error compile. I recall that ./configure could not find ndbm.h, but it
exists in two forms with minor differences:

/usr/include/db1/ndbm.h
/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/include/ndbm.h

# diff /usr/include/db1/ndbm.h /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/include/ndbm.h
39,40c39,40
< #ifndef _NDBM_H
< #define _NDBM_H 1

> #ifndef _NDBM_H_
> #define _NDBM_H_
79c79
< #endif /* ndbm.h */
---
> #endif /* !_NDBM_H_ */

Might it be that there is supposed to be a local copy of this .h
file included in the source tree? OTOH, I did get this with ./configure:

checking ndbm... checking for dbm_open in -lndbm... (cached) yes
found ndbm

have you tried using the ./configure flags
'--includedir=/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/include' or
'--prefix=/usr/i386-glibc-20-linux'? (or either with 'db1' instead

The compile ("make") failed in the same way for each of the
following, which is what I presume you were asking me about (pine has

I didn't see your original message, so I don't know which error
message you are getting. I assume this thread started on the
Edmonton Linux User Group <elug at linux.ab dot ca>, but I'm not a member
(so I can't reply to there nor see posts).

Also, please do a 'make realclean' before trying each ./configure
command, and then if the subsequent 'make' fails, please send the
errors, plus the output from ./configure, and the generated
config.h file.

This is the problem. Neither ./configure nor the compiler can find
any of the *dbm.h files. You can try making a link from one of them
to /usr/include, or you can try adding one of the ./configure flags
'--includedir=/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/include' or
'--prefix=/usr/i386-glibc-20-linux' (or either with 'db1' instead of
'i386-glibc20-linux').

Please do a 'make realclean' before trying each ./configure command,
and then if the subsequent 'make' fails, see if ./configure was able
to locate the .h file.

Subject: clear text passwords

Hi,

Thanks to those who pointed out my mistakes.... anyway finally got
qpopper running with apop authentication..... now the problem is, one
of the directors uses outlook 98, and as far as i know outlook doesn't support apop,
and with my setup he can't receive any email.

How can i get around this ?, do i have to use clear text passwords ?
if so how would i go about setting this up ?

Thanks

Wasim

I believe both Outlook and Netscape both support POP over an SSL
connection. It would be an interesting project to hack OpenSSL library
hooks into Qpopper. Incidentally sendmail and most other modern UNIX
MTAs now do TSIG and/or SSL as well.

There's Kerberos too of course...a more completely solution.

Probably the easiest way would be to leave the clear text password
setting at the default, which permits clear text passwords for users
not in the APOP database. Then remove the director's username from
the APOP database. Now the director can use clear text passwords,
but everyone else uses APOP.

You could also suggest that the director try Eudora
<http://www.eudora.com>, which supports APOP and has a number of nice
features.

If you check near the end of the "INSTALL" document, it describes
how to invoke qpopper and with what options. I believe one of the options
(-p 2) is what you are looking for.

In my first followup, I noted that even though it didn't find
ndbm.h, there was a line further down that might have indicated that it
did find something for it, hence my confusion.

The solution, then was to create a symbolic link:

ln -s /usr/include/db1/ndbm.h /usr/include/ndbm.h

I still wonder what it is about the (OS) installs that don't
always seem to create things where they need to be or make them available
properly, but I am learning more on the development side :-)

Now it's off to test the results. Thanks to Qpopper Support, ELUG
and Qpopper mailing list members who provided information publicly and
privately...

You might want to try and type quota -v on the filesystem first. Most
people set the quota on the filesystem.

There is no configuration file, I don't think (I've never used one).
Just the argument vector. POP is generally generic enough that there
really isn't a need for a config file.

Hi -

I know this comes up every so often, but so far searching at google.com
hasn't been very fruitful - found lots of requests but few answers.

Does anyone here have a version of poppassd that runs under Linux, has
support for shadow passwords and/or APOP auth (based on whether the user
is listed in the pop.auth file)? If not, I'll hack my own, but I'd much
rather start with a good base if possible. Everything I've found is
six or seven years old, or doesn't support shaodw, or doesn't support
APOP - I'd like to be able to use either.

Thanks,
Steve

PS: Qualcomm, there is no such thing as "Linux 7", but the references
to it are peppered throughout your FAQ and INSTALL documentation.

Swap: 514040K av, 0K used, 514040K free 207648K cached

The system looks stable except for the 500+ processes and the 45
zombies. ps -ef | grep popper shows over 270 pop requests. This is a
sampling:

wandad 14992 1 0 Nov13 ? 00:00:00 popper -scR
wandad 14997 1 0 Nov13 ? 00:00:00 popper -scR

root 15735 1 0 Nov13 ? 00:00:00 popper -scR

How can one user have multiple pop requests? And why does root have so
many? I'm under the impression that root is owning the requests that
haven't been handed off, but I'm certainly no expert. Can anyone suggest
a solution of any sort? Has anyone else faced this issue? We are running
popper from inet with the following:

pop3 stream tcp nowait.75 root /usr/local/lib/popper popper -scR

And I compiled 3.1.2 as follows:

./configure --enable-specialauth
--enable-temp-drop-dir=/var/spool/poptemp --enable-debugging
--enable-servermode --enable-shy --with-log-facility=LOG_LOCAL0
--enable-timing

No limit at quota -v. the setting is set to none with quota -u and -g
for user/group.

Looks like it has to do with userquota on file sys. had it turned off
with quotaoff -v /home. is this an issue?

There is a configuration file available in 3.1, but it's optional.

However, there aren't any quota related configuration options. If
the problem is that quota prevents mail from being delivered,
adjust the quota or adjust the local delivery agent.

One of my staff ported poppassd to talk to Linux shadow password kits
several years ago. It doesn't talk APOP and I'd recommend against doing
so in any case as password exchange is in plaintext.

He also wrote a bit of CGI which talks to poppassd, allowing password
changing via https.

As an "added bonus", the Manawatu poppassd can also synchronise SMB
paswords.

This is saying that these symbols are missing from your system, so DRAC
can't link successfully. (It will compile successfully as it doesn't
need those symbols until link time.) That looks like RPC stuff. Are you
missing some RPC library? (BTW, XDR is eXternal Data Representation,
how parameters are portably packaged when used with RPC.)
