As far as I can tell, this question has never been answered in the
'qpopper' mailing list.

The 'rpm' program is much more than a 'tar'-like archive program. It
can store all sorts of related information, more like DEC's 'setld' or
HP's 'install' [IIRC]. If you are installing sources, you could put
additional commands in the "install" section, or just make them part of
the "install" section of the Makefile. If you are installing binaries,
then make the commands part of the pre/post-install/uninstall scripts.

Cf. <URL: http://www.rpm.org/RPM-HOWTO/build.html>. [The documentation
has apparently migrated from redhat.com to rpm.org.]

Gerhard,

You have bulletin board capability turned on and the users
file permissions are not setup correctly to allow qpopper to
create the .popbull file. Read the install notes and release notes
to see the correct setup(s).

Which version of AIX? If it's a system error number look in
/usr/include/sys/errno.h, which on AIX 4.2 (and probably all the
others actually) it gives "interrupted system call". If that's indeed
what's happening the program in question should probably simply retry
whatever it's doing. Maybe it already is....

 From common/maillock.h:

#define L_MAXTRYS       4       /* cannot link to lockfile after N tries */

This is the error if the lock is busy for long enough that we give up.

maillock should probably have a function to return friendly error strings.

Subject: bugs in pop_bull.c

Hi,
there have been some bugs in pop_bull.c for a long time. They appear when
there is failure writing a bulletin eg. out of memory or overquota. Many of
the failures are handled with the pop_msg routine which sends back an error
to the client, the problem is that this is then followed by an OK line

eg

+OK QPOP (version 3.0b34_DEBUG) at local host starting.
user test
+OK Password required for test.
pass ****
-ERR Bull: Can't build message list for 'test': Out of memory
+OK test has 16 messages (107716 octets).

I think this is against the RFC, but even if it's not it causes lots of
mail clients to disconnect after the -ERR. Popper is expecting them to keep
going after the +OK so it shows up as a dropped connection at the server end.

Since failing to deliver bulletins is not a critical failure, I've been
changing all of these pop_msgs to pop_logs instead, otherwise someone with
a bulletin which would push them over the quota is in a catch 22 situation,
can't get the bulletin until they delete their mail, can't delete their
mail until they get the bulletin!

I haven't included a patch, as I'm not 100% sure that all of the pop_msg
calls should be changed. I have been changing all of them for a long time
now with no ill effects. Thanks,

Fergal

I think it is a clear bug, in that the error should abort the
session. There are a lot of pop_log calls already, which I've been
changing to pop_msg. This will show up in b35. (I noticed them when
working on something else in that file). There probably needs to be
a return as well, to avoid continuing.

Over quota errors generally abort the session. That's a fact of
life. It's one of the reasons there is no a SYS response code (so
the client can alert the user who can get an admin to help).

I think the bug is a lack of a return.

They all do return, the problem is that pop_bull calls CopyOneBull and
ignores the return code if it's a failure!

One could make the case that bulletins are not a part of the mail
collection system but a part of the mail delivery system (triggered by the
collection system) and as such an error in with bulletins should not
prevent checking mail, the same way an error in sendmail's delivery will
not prevent checking mail.

I'd imagine at most qpopper sites bulletins are far less important than
users' email. Leaving everything as pop_log means that a user can carry on
as if nothing was wrong, and the bulletin will be delivered next time. If
you change this so that bulletin problems cause an abort then a problem
with bulletins turns into something that locks a user out completely, or
possibly even locks out ALL users (eg corruption of the bulletin db would
prevent anyone from doing anything).

We're pushing on 50,000 accounts here, that's a lot of tech support calls!

Just wondering if someone can help here.

Why does my friggen mail server delete my messages when it gets downloaded?
Ok my mail server is a dedicated box with a separate ip address. It then
gets downloaded to another mail server locally for office use.

Is this a problem with my local mail server or what????

thanks for yer help guys :)

hello
I installed procmail -3.14 with sendmail-8.9.3 and qpopper 2.5.3
I have procmail as the local mail agent delivering the mail to $home
my problem is qpopper is still trying to retrieve the mail from /var/mail

As per the qpopper faq I ran
configure --enablr-home-dir-mail=Mailbox

but it still generates config.h with /var/mail

How do I tell qpopper to retrieve someones emails from $home/.mail ?

Thank you

Techinally your mail client deletes the email when you download it. This is
the "default" for most clients, most (if not all clients) have an options
called "Leave Messages on Server" or "Do not delete messages from server",
things like that. I know for a fact OutLook Express, Netscape Mail, Eudora
all have this options, just click around the option is there.

It doesn't look like a problem with your local mail server, but you local
mail pop3 client.

From the errors, my guess is that ./configure didn't find the
standard C headers (stdlib.h, stdio.h, etc.) and thus assumed you
were using an ancient K&R compiler, and failed to define
STDC_HEADERS. To confirm this, try 'fgrep STDC_HEADERS config.h' and
see if it is defined to 1 or is undefined.

--enable-home-dir-mail=Mailbox is not supported in 2.53 -- you have
to use 3.0. The current 3.0 is 3.0b34.

It would help if you gave details, such as what software is used on
the different boxes you mention. Are the messages transferred from
the first to the second server using POP, IMAP, SMTP, UUCP...? What
software is doing this transfer? Which servers are running?

HELP!

I'm trying to get a copy of qpopper 2.53 running on SCO Unixware 2.1.3.

At present I keep getting errors cropping up when I compile that are
supposedly in /usr/include/sys/socket.h . I'm pretty sure that this is not
the case.

If anyone out there in qpopper-land has managed to get this running on SCO,
PLEASE drop me a line at aaron at cpc.net dot au

I'm running out of expletives to call my server :)

I did it recently.
Compile qpopper with support for APOP. Read the INSTALL file for more
instructions. Of course the mail browser of the user must support APOP.

Dear friends,

I've been trying to install qpopper3.0b34 with pam support.
I configured it with the following flags:
./configure --with-pam --enable-specialauth --enable-servermode --enable-bul
ldb=/var/spool/bulls --enable-debugging --enable-shy
the system I'm installing the server is a Slackware Linux 7 kernel 2.2.13.
While without the pam support everything works great, when I enable pam
support I get the following message when I telnet into the pop3 port.
"User not known to the underlying authentication module"
Anyone has any ideas on how to cope with this problem?
Thank you in advance.

What is the contents of your /etc/pam.d/pop3 file?

Also, see <http://www.qpopper.org/faq.html#PAM>.

Is it possible to set up a time stamp for lock files?

A lot of users in my server have the same problem.
So I delete manually the lock file ".user.pop", but where can I set a
time for automatically free them?
I'm running qpopper 3.0b26.

Thanks.

Is the -T option to popper perhaps relevant? I"m using -T 300 on a
machine with 800 users, and all seems well.

So we get a good deal further with #define STDC_HEADERS 1..

The .user.pop file should be deleted when the session ends. If it
isn't, there is a problem (unless you have compiled with
KEEP_TEMP_DROP set).

First off, you should immediately upgrade from 3.0b26 to 3.0b34. Do not delay.

If the problem persists,

The timestamp is inserted by syslogd. That system has a leap year bug.

Not sure if I've seen ref to this message on the list before or not.
But I now have a customer complaining about reading mail.

Symptom is we send say 3 messages
2 plain text messages, nothing special
then the 3rd message contains a attachement (we tested with 600K jpg)

Client system dials into us at mid 40K connects and downloads mail
using Eudora Pro (sorry not sure what ver it was)
Apparently first 2 messages download fine, then while the 3rd message
is being downloaded, the transfer seems to lock or at least stop.
We then get the following message in our popper.log file

Mar 2 15:04:18 mur3.odyssey.on.ca popper[16063]: username at mail.domain dot com:
-ERR POP EOF or I/O error: Bad file number (9)

I have had one of our techs tell me same thing happens if we use Outlook
Express to read the mailbox.

Is this maybe a timeout issue that I should add a timeout config option to
the inetd.conf file?

Currently config line is:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/lib/popper popper -s -T600

Running qpopper3.0b32 in server mode on Sparc UltraII, Solaris 2.7

Oh and btw: if we sent the messages in the other order all 3 messages
download just fine.

I use pam.conf
Do I also need to have a pam.d directory?

The directives found under pam.conf are the following concerning the pop3
protocol.
pop3 auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow
pop3 account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
pop3 password required /lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
pop3 password required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok
use_authtok md5 shadow
pop3 session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

My system uses shadow passwords.

You can just change the shell in /etc/passwd.

I solved the problem with pam
The pam_pwdb.so was not working properly (god knows why) and I used the new
pam_unix.so to authenticate.
I no longer get the message "User not known to the underlying authentication
module"
Strange behavior though. Has anyone ever had any problems with the
pam_pwdb.so under slackware?

The command "passwd -l username" will exchange the passwordstring in
/etc/passwd with a value known as "locked" . On SGI IRIX this is an
asterisk (*), I think it's about the same on other UNIXes/LINUX.
Drawback: the old password is erased! (Should'nt be a problem for root
to set it again though ;-))

Yes, this is a good solution. I don't think changing the shell in =
/etc/passwd, as has been suggested in other mail, has any effect on a =
user's ability to pick up mail (but it will obviously stop them telnetting =
into your machine). You have to actually stop a user from being authenticat=
