I must say that qpopper so far is a great mail server to set up I have set
it up in redhat 5.2, 6.0 and now FreeBSD. It worked great on a small scale
testin all cases without a hitch. Now it is time to bump up the stakes... I
need to see it work for 30,000 users, here is the problem I can not find a
add user script anywhere for FreeBSD. I would like on that will ad a list of
30,000 usernames and passwords to a system.. Also Is there someone who uses
qpopper on FreeBSD?? I just got done with the install on the latest version
of FreeBSD an noticed there was no group for pop users. I made one with a
PID 1500 does this sound right. what would a good dir layout,
/usr/popuser/username or /usr/username?

Subject: Proper Popper Performance

Say THAT three times fast ...

We seem to be getting bogged down by the popper process. We have a fair
number of pop3 clients configured to grab email and leave a copy on our
HPUX server (D3xx, HPUX 10.20), thus creating fair sized (5 - 30+ Mb)
mail directories. It seems that when a client is retrieving its email
and it kicks-off the popper process, popper seems to take a long time and
a good chunk of CPU to go through the mail on the server to figure out
what to send to the client. Worse than that, it also creates a lock file
while it's working to prevent new emails from slipping in while it's working.

The combination of lock files and length of time popper(s) is/are running
then causes email to bounce back with a directory locked message.

Any ideas/experience ?

TIA

Maybe you use MD5 passwords on your system? Qpopper reads /etc/passwd (or
/etc/shadow) and uses normal crypt() to compare supplied password with the
original one. PAM patch should help.

I use qpopper on FreeBSD not very many users but works fine.

The adduser script is /usr/sbin/adduser and is just a perl script that adds
one user. It wouldn't be hard to input from a file to create as many as needed.

here a message that makes hang Outlook and Qpopper (both 2.53 and 3.0b18).
When I delete it from the mailbox, the user can download the all the
message. I don't hide any information, so you can inspect better if
there's some problem.

The only problem with this approach is that it needs forking and
execing another program, this can be very resource consuming, I have 7K
kind of active users, this could impact performance somewhat.

I was also thinking of coding the "bulletin groups". It could be
done using Berkeley db instead of a text file to keep track of the bulletins
read and having multiple directories to store the messages. Inside this
directory we coud have a (let's say) "pop.list" file that would store the
"subscribers" to the bulletin.
I don't think it would be difficult to implement.

Why don't use group files (/etc/group) for such purpose? It is nice to
have all information in one place, instead of several different files.

Before I go reinventing the wheel, does anyone have a patch to qpopper to
make it skip the informational message the UWash Imap server injects into
each users mailbox? The UWash pop server never shows pop users this
message, but its performance is fairly low, and we need a faster solution.

Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 09:06:11 -0400

Hi,

How do I set up a relay for another domain in qpopper ? A friend and I want
to be redundant mail servers. I.e. If my server is down, he will hold my
mail until my server is up and then forward the mail to me via SMTP. The MX
records are already set up, I just don't know where to setup the relay.
Should this be done in exim ?

No need for lengthy discussion if you don't want to, just point me in the
direction please ...

thanks,

paul

We have about 20000 active accounts and we haven't suffered from it. It
doesn't call the program every time someone logs in, only when there is a
new bulletin waiting for them, that way if you only have 1 bulletin per
month you'll hardly notice it at all.

The reason I didn't code it in c is that I much prefer perl and it makes it
very easy to change, I can store the info in a mysql database or in the
groups file (as someone else suggested).

Relaying is a function of your SMTP daemon, not POP3.

Try http://www.sendmail.com for the sendmail homepage. There is some good
info there on relaying.

Also check out comp.mail.sendmail for the sendmail newsgroup

I'm having the very same problem. I have no idea what MD5 refers to,
and I've spent some time looking through PAM related things on my system
(RH 6.0) but can't make heads or tails. Can anyone explain what a PAM
patch would be, how to get it, or anything? I'm a bit lost here.

Thanks,

This isn't a qpopper issue, it's MTA related.

All you need to do is define the domains you relay for and where the
final delivery point is.

Simple with some MTAs, hard with others.

TIA

hi, i new at list.
I work under linux 5.2 with qpopper 2.53
yesterdey, i had a problem with the qpopper service, the service terminated.

I searched in the syslog and i find the next line:
Sep 27 16:15:17 srv002 inetd[64]: pop3/tcp server failing (looping), service
terminated

Then in FAQ i read that this error was because the default number the
conncections permitted by
inetd are 40, but my question is the next

is normal pop3 service terminated , and i had to do a kill -HUP [inetd-pid],
for start up the pop3 service.

Thank you in advance

Subject: how to enable users to change their password w.o. Eudora

Hello,

I'm using qpopper on solaris to enable students to read their email which
resides on that solaris server.

The only ways I know of to enable the users to change their password are:
1) use Eudora;
2) telnet to the solaris server, login, and change their password.

I can't require them to use Eudora, and I don't want them to have to telnet to
the server. Any ideas how they could otherwise change their password?

Secondly, I'd like to employ password aging on the solaris server. However, I
notice that Eudora's poppassd doesn't observe the password aging rules. Any
ideas how I could enforce password aging?

that the machine just would lock. I have only about 100+ users, which

I also run it from inetd..with same " -s " flag. However inetd runs smoothly
while pop refuse to make connections at 110.

for " telnet localhost 110"

while other services of inted work smoothly like telnet etc..

Nope.

I have 10,000 user's sucking up their email through PoP3.. Fortunately I got
some thing
from the archive that making "nowait.xxx" can increase the connection per min..
I m damp sure that
this is the reason behind " connection refuse" and in a sec I have 8 or 9
connections for popper -s.
Lets see how it works .. nowait.400.

You might look in you /ect/services see if the port 110 is open fot tcp,
then rem out the UPD port 110. see if your inetd.conf has the
whatever/qpopper3.0/popper/popper popper -s

Subject: Re: Resent: Qpopper3.0 Question

I had the same problem with Linux (Debian) and HP-UX 10.20.

Run ./configure and make. Ok. I followed the recipe and it did not work.

Now the second step:
The installation for qpopper 2.53 or 3.0 are similar. I installed qpopper3.0

1-You must go to the folder popper of your installation folder. Then copy the
executable file "popper" to the location "/usr/local/lib ". Do not change the
name. There is no reason to do this.
2- You need to configure your "inetd" to run. Edit your "inetd.conf" file and
add a line

pop3 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/lib/popper popper -s

The above line is for the case of Debian-linux. For the case of HP-UX10.20 it
is

pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/lib/popper popper -s

Save the file and REBOOT the computer. I do not think that if you restart
"inetd" under Linux it will work. I did not test yet, but I know that under
HP-UX it works only if we reboot the computer.

I hope this will work for you.

Note:
1-man pages and other things also need to be copied to theirs appropriate
locations.
2-What happens to the qpopper installation is that there is no "make install"
to complete the installation.

Chimera <chimera at DarkMUX dot net> told me that this also works with Linux Red Hat and
the there is no need to reboot the computer.

Where did you get the error "connection refuse"? because I was thinking
that I have the same problem but I don't see any connection refuse in the

Thank you

What's the recommend uid for the "pop" user? I'm using Red Hat 5.2, so
the next available uid below 20 (after user ftp, uid 14) is 15.
"Normal" users are assigned uids starting at 500. Should pop be given
its own group, or should it use the same group that mail uses (uid 8,
gid 12)? /etc/groups lists a popusers group at gid 231.

-ERR Unable to process From lines (envelopes), change recognition modes.

An "F" is missing from the header.
For example instead of
"From root Fri Oct 1 17:43:32 1999"

in the 1st line of the mailbox we have

"rom root Fri Oct 1 17:43:32 1999".

Does anybody know the cause of this strange corruption?

Greetings.

We have been experiencing a similar form of mailbox corruption for some time. The primary difference is that instead of a missing "F", the entire "From " line is missing. This seems to happen most often when the client is using one of the Outlook serie
s of mail clients, and seems to be preceded by the client downloading a completely blank message from the server. We have tried various versions of the POP3 server, as well as several versions of Sendmail, and cannot find an obvious cause. If anyone has
any idea as to what might be causing this, I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you in advance,

I've got this once. There were no missing From in the mailbox, it was
in the temporary file which was corrupted (.nameofthebox.pop if I remember well.)
Just remove it.

Hello,
I have experianced the same problem with popper, what i do open the mailbox
with pico program and delete all the lines before the From: this solves the
problem for some time but it does happen again.

The repair technique I use is to insert this as the first line of a corrupted spool file:

From unknown at oz dot net Fri Jul 9 10:00:00 1999

This fixes the problem in most instances, but certainly doesn't prevent it from reoccurring.

We do have been facing such problems every now and then .The problem contains a blank line at the top of the mail box or the duplicate From lines so write simple script that can make your life easy for rectifying such a problem of mailbox corruption.

How can I further diagnose this?

Subject: Very Slow problem.

Hi,

I'm running sendmail 8.9.3 with qpopper 3 on Solaris7 and it was running fine.

I've configured this mail server to be a DNS primary server recently and add
"dns" to the hosts entry under the nsswitch.conf file in order to work with NIS.
After that, I restart the process "inetsvc".

Ever since then, to retrieve and send mail from outlook express or netscape is
just a very long wait process. Although it did get through, that is very
frustrating too. I've tried to reboot the server and still happen the same
thing.

I know if I roll back to its original shape won't be a problem. For specific
reason, I'll need to use setup this machine with DNS, so I need to find out what
caused this problem. Hope some of you have come across the same problem and shed
some light on me.

Thank you,

after upgrading from Linux 2.x to RH5 and from sendmail to qpopper 2.53 it
is totally solved. We are in peace now.

I've a user that can't download the mail. I've installed a net sniffer.

stay a while on uidl command (it returns the strings correctly)

I have libc5, can be this a problem? or is it a client side problem? I can

Do you get any error messages? If not the popper file should be generated

Well I think I found the cause of the problem and it has to do with the file
locking that procmail does.
When procmail locks the file for mail delivery in the initial state you can
see 2 files with the size of 1 byte. The lock file contains character "0"
and the main file contains an "F".
-rw-rw---- 1 panda mail 1 Oct 5 19:03 panda
-r-------- 1 panda mail 1 Oct 5 19:03 panda.lock

Somehow if the user during that time was receiving mail through pop3 the "F"
is overwritten and when the mail delivery ends we have a corrupted mailbox.

I was able to reproduce the error by sending several emails to my self
through a dial-up connection by pressing send/receive in Outlook. The time
scale of the dial-up connection and the fact that outlook tried to receive
the mail I just sent produced the error.

Mail.local behaves differently but for the timing being I can not test it in
our main mail server with full load.

Any remarks are more than welcomed.

We've seen this problem before, at irregular intervals, on just POP (no procmail).

It requires that we go in and manually remove the /var/mail/.user.pop.lock (whatever
it's named) file.

I've found it's more likely to happen with users who have very large POP mailboxes.

I have just installed the latest version of procmail(v3.13.1) and it seems
to behave much better in file locking.
The previous version of procmail in our mail server was v3.10

Subject: -err envelope corruption problem.

I've been reading this thread and it's extremely informative. I have a
similar problem that is most likely
related to the file.locking problem, and probally is related to the fact
that I have a 4 PC cluster connecting through NFS to a file server that
houses the mail..

Occasionally I have a mailbox corruption problem, but the problem is where
there are
X-UIDL:(garbage chars) lines before the "From" line in the mailbox,
corrupting it.

Is there anyway to disable Qpopper putting the X-UIDL lines in there, or is
qpopper even the program doing it? Any help would be appreciated.

How does one determine the root cause of a gdbm_open() failure? Should
errno have something useful, or do I look elsewhere?. (gdbm_open() is
used by popauth to manage the APOP database.) I'm happy to do the
debugging, but I've never used gdbm. (I've also never used gdb before,
but so far it seems pretty straightforward to drive. :-) If someone can
point me to a more suitable mailing list or web site for gdbm support,
I can continue my research there. I'll report back here what I find.
