It is required that you create two new folders and then assign the folder paths at the top of the script before dropping it in the Process Extenders folder. Note that only minimal testing has been done. <ftp://ftp.dnai.com/users/m/meh/AutoShare/Beta/Loops.sit.hqx> When a message file arrives in the Filed Mail folder, the RFC From and Subject fields are compared to previously stored message files in another folder. If a match is not found, the message file is copied to the folder. If a match is found, the message file in the Filed Mail folder is moved to yet another folder, which is a way of breaking a mail loop. And just before a comparison takes place, stored files older than one hour, also configurable at the top of the script, are deleted. Feel free to enhance the script.

When I try to add someone to a list I have to of course change to the preference set for that list, but through the web interface, I cannot get any changes to occur. After submitting my change it goes back to the main page and does not alter anything. If I use TB2 and change it with the admin too, it will then work if I add a user via the web interface. Subject: Managing EIMS accounts via autoshare Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 10:59:13 -0400 From: Eric Mings <elm at mail.ao dot net> I previously had good experience interacting with a FMP database through Autoshare. I now have the (perhaps wild) idea that I can create and manage EIMS email accounts through autshare using EIMS applescript capabilities. It is a little more complicated acutally. I have a linux server running PHP which I wish could directly interact with EIMS to do this, but obviously that ain't gonna fly. So what I plan to do is have PHP use a mail function to get sendmail to send a message to an EIMS account that triggers an autoshare postprocessing hook to create/manage other EIMS accounts. Anyone done such a thing yet? Regards, Eric Mings Ph.D.

Anyone done such a thing yet? It should be possible. For starters, see the process extender sample of type Script entitled List Mail Accounts. If you want to trigger process extenders by e-mail, the key is to pass needed information from the e-mail message to the process extender, or you can simply have the process extender read and parse the message file directly. I would suggest setting up a dedicated mail account for such as purpose.

OS 8.1, SIMS 1.8b6, AutoShare 4.0 I have selected HTML only for the archives, I have set the archive folder to be one in an area served by my web server and I have selected "Complete" in the web archive properties using the Admin tool. When I create a new list and post an item to it, the appropriate folder is created within the archive folder. I do not see an index.html file being generated in the top level archive folder. Within the list folder the only files I see being generated are daily digest files (which disappear when digests are processed), current.html and current.toc. I see no index.html files being generated in the top archive folder nor in the individual list folders. At present I hand created an index.html for the top level folder (since the number and names of list won't change often I could live with that), but I do not want to hand create index.html lists for each list's archive. When are the index.html files supposed to be generated? Is there a way to trigger the creation of index.html files immediately via the admin tool or via an Apple event? Thank you, Tod Fitch

The current.toc file is created in the email archive folder, which is only used when the archives are requested by email. You should change your archive folder path to point elsewhere, and set your default web path to the location you are currently using. Do [cmd]-L in the admin and click on the 'list' button to find the web path entry field. If you want all your lists to be archived in the same location, make sure that none of the lists is selected when you click on the 'list' button, and you will be able to set the default web path. Vinca" <mjv2411 at ritvax.isc.rit dot edu> Since I am working remotely, the lists were tested on my computer, then I built them on the other computer. The process by which this was done... Created all EIMS accounts before I left. Remotely configured each list. To force lists to be formed in the first place, blank text files were FTPed to the Lists folder. After Autoshare restarted, preference sets were formed with defaults. Remotely, I changed all these preference sets depending on the list. (NS, Scripts, etc.) I then took our old lists, which were in the text format, and copied them to a non-Autoshare folder (via FTP). Before I did this, I changed their creator to Autoshare. Then I wrote an Applescript Applet to launch these lists. This caused the text file to be opened by Autoshare, subscribing the members to the list. The members appear in the FMPro database, which tells me, or so I thought, that the Script setting is working correctly. Memory is a very limiting factor on the computer at this time. (They were supposed to max the memory out two months ago but have failed to do so. Our budget is extremely tight.) Could lack of sufficient memory cause this behavior? The format is the exact same format as the database provided with Autoshare with two exceptions. The database has been opened in FMP 4.0. The Date is in EDT, as prompted by FMP when opened. What does it mean? As it says in the AutoShare documentation: e-mail-address (user-name..z) where z is ruled by the following list of codes: 0: concealed (if visible, then no 0) 1: digest (if messages, then no 1) 2: no mail (if mail, then no 2) 3: acknowledgement (if not, then no 3) 4: not allowed to post (if post, then no 4) So these users that have a "3" will get copies of their own posts when they post to your mailing list. (I usually use a default of "034" since most of my lists are announce-only; a list to which subscribers can post should probably be "03".) HTH. Regards Mark Hartman

Y2K testing, perhaps? If AutoShare was running and the clock was set to some future date, it may be that the time configured for the next digest is now some way off in the distant future! You can clear the log by pressing the Now button using the Times menu item in the server application, as sending logs initializes the logs at the same time. The current files in the Archives folder are simply the archive files, whose names begin with Current and which can be cleared by renaming them, and also the digest files, which can be cleared in a way similar to the logs. <snip end> if i understand the above procedure correctly the following needs to happen for a successful upgrade: a) clear the AS log file by either deleting it from the AS prefs folder or by selecting TIMES/NOW in the AS admin app b) clear the AS digest files by selecting TIMES/NOW in the AS admin app c) rename all 'Current' files in the AS archives folder so here is what i should do then: - move all data i want to keep from the old AS 2.4 to the appropriate 4.0 folder locations. - open the AS 4.0 admin app and clear logs and digests - rename all 'Current' files in AS archives folder - start AS 4.0 server app ... done! question: instead of renaming all 'Current' files in AS archives folder to <what's the new naming convention?>, couldn't i just remove them entirely, keep them on files elsewhere and have AS 4.0 rebuilt the AS archives folder structure for each mailing list upon restarting the server app? any comments? ... thanks. -- Timo Ochmann <mailto:timo at bigmindmedia dot com> BigMindMedia <http://www.bigmindmedia.com/> Information Architect / System Administrator Home: 425.258.3297 / Cell: 425.750.3015 / Fax: 419.831.5657

The digest time/now takes care of the current file pair for digests; you may want to rename the current archive files as well. >instead of renaming all 'Current' files in AS archives folder to <what's the >new naming convention?>, couldn't i just remove them entirely, keep them on >files elsewhere and have AS 4.0 rebuilt the AS archives folder structure for >each mailing list upon restarting the server app? You could, but then the digests and archives would be missing some messages. Not a big deal, unless you prefer to be entirely complete. And if you do nothing at all, there might a single log, digest, archive which looks funny. That's all.

I would go for a moderated list and then set up a process extender of type Before Processing, which replaces the address of the envelope recipient with that of the listmaster and then immediately moves the message file to the Incoming Mail folder. You would first check for the list name and the list server command. This would treat subscriptions like an private list does. Maybe I'll do something similar to /=forward <address> = sends copy of original message to address which instead would be /=redirect <address> = redirects original message to address to be added to your sub document.

I've been seeing a pattern recently of someone sending a subscribe request to a list, then sending a spam, then sending an unsubscribe. For most list servers, this would work. However, Mikael made it simple enough to set up confirmation requests for any action that ALL my lists are set up that way - and, since the spammer is always using a bogus address, they never get the confirmation requests and therefore never get subscribed... and the spam never gets out. If I'm seeing this kind of activity, you're probably going to see it soon. If you have ANY list which does not require mail-back confirmation, you can count on a spammer using it very shortly, and your users blaming you. I've got the feeling that lack of mail-back confirmation on a list will shortly become as offensive as an open mail relay. Luckily, AutoShare will handle this with virtually no effort on your part.
From: Laine Lee <LLee at utsa dot edu> Subject: Process Extender basic question Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 16:54:05 -0500 I'll admit that I don't understand the documentation about process extenders very well, but I do a little applescript and I just thought I'd ask: Is a process extender what I need to do something like adding a short identifying label text (such as [Fun-L]) to the subject or from field of each message that AutoShare distributes? Configuration menu > lists. Select the list and click the list button. The prefix field puts the label before the subject on all mailings. Put the label you want to be added into the field and click update.

Yes, that is possible. In the documentation, see Running the server Running a list server List server and list basics Moderators

The remote review is supported for the standard subscriber format only, for reasons that escape me at this time, but probably due to optional fields. You can use the Review process extender sample of type Remote.

I'm not sure I understand. There is no built-in feature to configure the sender address to whatever you like. If you write a process extender, you can do it.
