Well, I don't want to contradict our Guru, but I edited the text file,
then quit and re-started AutoShare, and the new entries were not added. I
tested this two times (pretty extensive, eh?), and neither time were the
hosts recognized by AutoShare. Maybe I just misunderstand, but it doesn't
look like it works to me. And it really isn't needed, anyway. If it were
me, I wouldn't fix it, I would just delete reference to it in the
documentation. FWIW.

Subject: Hello, and a question about configuration of lists and multiple

Hello, as a new subscriber to this list, and new user of autoshare.
In migrating from Majordomo, i have high standards; in reading the
documentation, i have high hopes they'll be met. :)

My question regards the configuration of a list with multiple domains. To wit:

Our mail server (EIMS) and Autoshare at mail.iglhrc.org. Mail is also
(and normally) recieved @iglhrc.org. When sending messages to
fun-l at mail.iglhrc dot org (a test list) no problems; to fun-l at iglhrc dot org,
a get an error "Sorry. The domain of the recipient address is not
valid."

So, how to make the list work with both domain and machine? Any help
or pointers to the appropriate section of the manual will be a gift.

If AutoShare is to receive messages, whose recipient domain may be
different from the domain of the bounce address that you entered when
you first configured AutoShare, you can proceed in two different ways.

1. Multi-domain hosts
   <http://www.dnai.com/~meh/autoshare/documentation/#hosts>
This approach is the easiest. By adding your domains as the AutoShare
hosts (in the Admin, Command-H), you're telling AutoShare to accept
all of those domains in a joint pool, and all lists will happily use
any of those domains. As mail.iglhrc.org is different from
iglhrc.org, you can have one be the domain of the bounce address and
add the other as a secondary host entry.

2. Multiple preference sets
   <http://www.dnai.com/~meh/autoshare/documentation/#multipreference>
This approach is far more ambitious. If you have two domains foo and
bar, and you want it to be okay to send mail to the list at
fun-l@foo, but not okay to fun-l@bar, then this is the way to go.
There is much more to this feature than just this, so if you need it,
it is good advice to be sure you do.

Subject: HTML in web archives?

From: Charles L. Martin <clmartin at theombudsman dot com>

I remember a while ago there was a message explaining that there was a
way to get HTML in a message sent to a list to display as HTML in web
archives, I think. But, I can't figure out how to get it to work. Can
someone help me out? Or tell me that I misunderstood?

What I want to do is to sent a message to a list. In the body of the
message, I want to put the HTML code to display a table (in the web
archive). Instead, the archive contains the encoded characters, so it
displays the HTML source instead of interpreting it to draw the table.

MIME is such a complex beast. An HTML message relies not only on HTML
code in the body, but also on an RFC Content-Type header field being
text/html. This Content-Type header field is not stored in the
archives.

Subject: Thanks for the fix...

Hi everyone and especially Mikael,

I followed your advice about SetRes and it helped me doing what I
need, so thank you very much. Now, I feel guilty for being the one
that induced you to add Folder Path to Send Mail, because I don't
need it anymore... I just have complete control on the file's
location, its data and resource forks.

However, I first neglected your advice about writing at least one rfc
header in the file's text. To add to my fault, I wrote a test file
directly in the Incoming Mail folder, and it went straight through
one of my subscription lists the fake sender wasn't subscribed to :)
I should note also that a completely empty file with only resources
didn't make it through.

I will follow your advices more carefully :)

Thanks again,

Serge

The interesting thing is, if I view the source, there _is_ and <HTML> tag
at the top of the archive page. The problem is that the HTML in the
message is encoded (by AutoShare?). If I could get AS to stop encoding
the HTML, maybe it would display. I'm not going to worry too much about
it, though, as it works great as it is. I was just dreaming. <g>

Subject: autoshare plus SIMS account = web archive?

Hi all;

I just started reading the docs, but my goal is to set up a web archive
for a mailing list- not one that I'm running, but one or which I am a
subscriber. Will Autoshare let me do this?

The account that receives the mailing list messages is on my SIMS 1.8b8
server; I'm hoping to find a way to have those messages stored in a way
that autoshare can get at them and make an archive available on the web
for them. Tips on the best way to set up a web-based search for the
archive would also be welcomed (I think I'll need another app to do this).

I'll have time to read docs in detail and set things up over the holiday
weekend, but if there is anything special I should do (or more importantly
NOT do) to avoid problems, I'd apreciate input from those who have done
this already.

Server is MacOS 8.6, SIMS1.8b8, and I'm not running the list from here,
but want to maintain an archive as there is not one at present. About
1000-1500 messages/month.

Thanks for any thoughts! Especially, please let me know if this is not
workable for some reason! :)

Brian

You could just set up a list the normal way using your account to
feed Autoshare with mail. But if the messages come from a list that
uses the precedence: bulk header, I'm afraid Autoshare will just drop
the mails (anti-loop feature).

If you upgrade to OS9 and ASIP 6.3, you can set-up Sherlock to automatically
index *just* the folder you have the archive in, and ASIP 6.3 comes with a
sample Sherlock HTML page you can use for html-based searches. You don't
need any more apps. Just make sure that you only index the mail folder,
otherwise users will do a search and get hits for files they don't want and
can't access on other parts of your server.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorting through the Autoshare docs, and hopefully will shortly get
things set up.

I'm a little confused about the OS9/ASIP 6.3 thing you mention though-
ASIP server is still a separate, expensive addon still, right? Or does
the OS9 sherlock search tool do all I need without additional $?

I looked at the OS9 specs at Apple's site, but didn't see anything about
defining/preparing content for serving content just with Sherlock. Only
searching other sites.

Other suggestions for building a web search tool appreciated- no one
external to the archive will be using the search command built into the
listserv, since no one will be sub'd for this implementation...

And, any other possible "gotcha's" besides the precedence-bulk header?
They aren't using that at present, I'll email the admin and ask them not
to start! :)

Also, would it make a difference (in potential loops or config
problems) in how I get the mail to autoshare? Recall I wish only to make a
web archive of material coming from another list. I could sub my list up
directly to the other listserv, or I could make a SIMS account that
is sub'd to the external list, and forwards the incoming mail to a
autoshare list that no one else knows about. Could/does it matter how I
set up the mail flow here? I'm likely going to do the latter, that way if
there are any problems, I think? they'd stay local. I do not wish to
cause problems for the main list or their admin, no matter what....

Thanks for any further advice-

Brian

Yes, ASIP is a separate piece of software that you have to purchase (I was
thinking you might be running it on your server). It has file and web
service. Sherlock would do all your indexing of content, and ASIP can access
the index data when someone triggers a search. ASIP comes with sample pages
of Sherlock search and results pages so it doesn't take much to customize
them for your own needs.

Thanks for the emails; I've set up a list pretty easily, I think I have
the web archive set up (not tested yet, but it seems straightforward).

I'm setting this up out of the goodness of my heart on one of my office
machines, so am not going to buy the ASIP server for this :) although it
would be nice to have. If I can't find a freebie solution to run on this
machine, I'll just set up Google or something, and if people don't like
it, they can set up their own!

I have one set of hopefully last questions:

I really would like to set up a filter that would accept (and distribute
to the web archive and my one test subscriber) submissions from the big
list, but never broadcast anything back to them. That way I can't ever
start something that would be turn out badly. People subscribing lists to
other lists have caused problems often...I don't wish to do that.

I read that with ack turned off, they will not get their own posts
(submitted to my list) reflected back to them, but the only way I can see
to have their stuff accepted for my "fake" list, is to have them also
subscribed, which means any items I post to the list to test my side, will
get broadcast out on their list. I found the "vacation notice" filter and
other filter options, but don't see a way to make that do what I want:
allows this address to post repeatedly, but block any outgoing mail from
my list to that address, no matter what. Is there a way to do this?

Also, I have a few months of backlogged mail from the main list that I
could forward to my archive and thus have in included. How does the web
archive set up the date for the HTML links? If I set my system clock to
Sept, and mail all the Sept posts over, will that put them all properly
labelled as Sept posts in the web archive (I can run my mail client on the
same machine as the server so everything wil have the same current
date/time). I'd just then change clock to Oct and repeat for Oct
posts... will this work? I assume if I mail them as is, the most current
timestamp would be the real date/time, and I'd have a very looong November
archive...

Thanks for any further help!

I have a closed mail list set up for an organization I am in. In that list
are all members of the organization. The list is configured such that only
submissions from members (list distribution) are accepted. I use a database
program to generate the list addresses for AutoShare, including assuring
that the entries are sorted properly. This works well. So far, so good.

I would like to add a couple more lists that are subsets of the main one
(e.g. new members and board of directors). I can easily create these as I
have done with the original one. Except I would like any one in the whole
organization to be able to submit to any of the lists, but I want to reject
submissions from people from outside the organization. Is there some way to
have a list of authorized submitters that is different than the
distribution list?

I would think that the easiest way to do this might be to have the =

Autoshare will do that just fine. =

Subject: Activating remote administration & modifying built-in messages

Hi,

Having recently upgraded to AutoShare 4.2.1, remote administration
disappeared. Reading the manual, there is a reference to Misc Stuff...

Important change: the letter B in Misc Stuff must be specified to have
remote administration by e-mail be active.

The Admin utitilty is recommended as the interface to Misc Stuff, but I
cannot get it to work. Besides, I prefer to use ResEdit. What are the STR#
and field index number for the Misc Stuff in the AutoShare Preferences file?

On the issue of built-in "error" messages, is it possible to modify the
text of these messages? A list owner would like to modify the message
returned when someone tries to post a message containing too much quoted text.

TIA,
Chris

Okay, so you want everyone in the organization to be able to post to
all lists, while at the same time everyone receives list
contributions from the main list and only some of them do so for each
of the other lists?

That makes sense.

As you have some database stuff going, it would be tempting to have
only one database file with one record per subscriber and then have
subset fields for each and every list tied to each record. That would
be the leanest. Dunno if it's possible.

I got a little curious about it, so Charles kindly mailed me a Filed
Mail folder message file and a web browser screen dump. It turned out
that while the message body looked like a nicely formatted HTML
table, the message's RFC Content-Type header field was not text/html,
but rather text/plain. Once changed, all was well, also in the web
archives. My suggestion is to upgrade the client e-mail software.

Anyway, this is right up the alley of some other stuff I have been
thinking of lately when revisiting text/html in MIME digests. The
MIME digest feature was introduced in AutoShare two years ago and can
be activated by adding the letter L in List Stuff. Just be sure to go
from Text Plain to MIME QP first.

The MIME digest functionality is pretty neat. If you go into the
Attachment part of the Settings in Eudora and check "Receive MIME
digests as attachments", then those attachments when opened are
displayed as a regular Eudora mailbox with individual messages, which
is a rather nifty deal. It also works quite nicely with HTML list
contributions as well as attachments.

I have taken another look at all of this recently and have attended
to minor inaccuracies in the way AutoShare creates MIME digests.

Thanks, Mikael. I have not been able to get it to work, but I will keep
trying. Claris Emailer does not deal with MIME at all (other than to
filer it out). I tried using Netscape Messenger, but no settings would
get this to work, either. Later I will find time to try Outlook. I have
stuck to Claris Emailer for years because it handles multiple accounts
effortlessly, and no other program I have tries does it without great
difficulty. Since I have about a dozen accounts I use regularly, I really
need something that will let me access them all when I want to, but deal
with them individually when I need to.

I haven't used Claris Emailer for a couple of years, but I wonder why
Eudora wouldn't be OK. I have multiple accounts in a big way and love
Eudora's multiple personalities feature. And I'm still fairly sane, I
think :-) Randy, our listmaster, can tell us about Eudora, I'm sure.

One way is to have the mail subscriber option be turned off as a list
default, but any given subscriber can of course change that at any
given time. Another way is to kill processed message files to the
list, which a simple process extender of type After Processing can
attend to. You can also configure the mail server to let <list>.m and
<list>.d be bogus recipients, which may be the easiest solution.
Anyway, AutoShare naturally doesn't offer what you want as an
explicit feature, because outgoing mail is a cornerstone of any mail
server or list server.

There are various solutions for trying to deal with various
challenges, or problems if you will. I guess the outcome depends on
the various aspects of the given situation.

Anything can be faked, given the right circumstances. One essential
helping hand is changing the system clock, as you say. The date
stamps, I think, always reflect the "current" time when given
situations take place.

and of course they'd still receive (on the big list) any "test" messages
that I sent to my little list even if mail subscriber is off (that's just
ack/noack for your own submissions if I recall correctly).

	I'll look at that, thanks!

I don't have a clue how this would work, but I'll read the manual
for it :)

right. I'm warping the intended use a little!

Thanks very much for the tips! I really appreciate it.

Super, and easy to arrange :)

Thanks very much, again.

No, if you SET NOMAIL, the subscriber gets, you guessed it, NO MAIL!.
Nothing. Nada. They can post, but do not receive anything back. It is
entirely different from ACK/NOACK, which only applies to your own posts.

Just substitute a bogus file for the subscriber list in the List Server
folder.

Subject: Has this happened to anyone else?

[I tried making this post weeks ago from my other e-mail, but it
never got posted, just seem to disappear into vapor... A couple of
updates, the newly fixed lists continue to become corrupted (I have
to babysit them now), and I'm now using AS 4.2.1]

I have been spending the last couple of days handling a crisis which
I haven't a clue what caused it.

=46irst the digests started getting garbled and corrupted to our
mailing list. Then people started getting unsubscribed. As I looked
into it, I discovered that the mailing list docs were corrupted too!
Attached at the bottom of this note is an example of what one of the
list files looked like. I have painstakingly repaired the file
(deleting the .m and .d file and restarting autoshare after rebooting
the server). Slowly, the corruption continues. Random characters
are being converted to other characters, lines getting cut off. What
could be causing this? I'm using Autoshare 4.2. There is nothing
else going wrong with the server (running on OS 9 on a 4400/200).

I'm at my wit's end here, and hope someone can help out. I have been
able to retrieve a copy of the list file from a month ago, if that
helps. Perhaps there is some values which show up in this file which
can confuse Autoshare?

Do all of your list files look like that, if you open them using a
text editor? It's likely that something is corrupt on your disk. Did
you try installing a backup copy of your AutoShare preferences file
or create a new one? Are you sure your mail server environment is
fine?

Please tell me what settings I can adjust to make version B in the following
example become identical to version A. As you can see (if the autoshare-talk
version doesn't double the effect), the URL link is broken in the middle
(near the end in this example) rather than being compiled correctly. Thanks.

Version A (distributed to normal AutoShare subscribers):

Mydownloadfile
http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi
My file intended for html download

Version B (distributed to digest subscribers and stored in web archives):

Mydownloadfile
<A
HREF="http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.s">http://www.usa
domain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi</A>
mi
My file intended for html download

This machine is used for a lot of other things, and I have not seen
corruption anywhere else except the Autoshare list files. I have other
accounts on our EIMS mail server which have been working flawlessly.

I just cannot even imagine what is causing it. After I manually repaired
this file the first time, I monitored it, and began to see things change
again. Is there any value for an e-mail or subscriber name which might be
causing this? For instance, we have one user who's e-mail is in the format
some_name at [111.222.333 dot 444] format. I have another that had put quotes
around their name when they subscribed (e.g., joe.bloe at mac dot com ("Joe
Blow"..3)).

I haven't tried deleting the preferences (didn't want to have to reset
everything again, and couldn't imagine how the preferences could be causing
this... then again, I can't imagine how anything could be causing this).

My test shows

Mydownloadfile
<A
HREF="http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi">http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi</A>
My file intended for html download

with

<A
HREF="http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi">http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/file1.smi</A>

being one line, which means that the URL is not broken. It also shows
up nicely in a web browser.

If you load the HTML file into a text editor such as BBEdit, turn off
Soft Wrap Text to see what happens.

There is no setting to make B look like A. One of the nice things in
a web browser is to be able to click and go somewhere.

Thanks, Mikael.

Can you think of anything that is causing links to hard wrap at the 77th
character? I did not include that many characters in my example but that may
or may not explain why it didn't show up when you tried it. You are invited
to subscribe in digest mode to my test mailing list to witness this happen.
Please send "sub fun-l Mikael Hansen (or any name you choose)" to
autoshare at moss.utsa dot edu then send "ind fun-l" to the same address and
request an individual current html or digest file to look at. Here's a URL
that should get messed up:
http://www.usadomain.pretend/Guests/directory1/Path/Name/Long/Enough/To/Forc
e/Hard/Wrap/file1.smi

If you send me privately a StuffIt'ed HTML file, I can look into it.

Hello everybody!

I have a problem with "high" ASCII characters in the RFC subject-line. I
hope the one line below is self-explanatory. It is what the mailing-list
redistributes:

-----
Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?[INSTITUT-NEWS-L] Ein Tip
f=?ISO-8859-1?B?/HIgRnL8?=haufsteher!?=
-----

The original subject (as it was originally sent) used to say:

-----
[INSTITUT-NEWS-L] Ein Tip für Frühaufsteher
-----

It contains two German umlaut u (&uuml;).

Thanks for any help!
Pascal

I am very sorry. The subject should have been:

It happened again. After weeks of the list being okay, all of a
sudden two people got unsubscribed today that shouldn't have been,

You think removing the Autoshare preferences is going to fix this?
This is starting to hurt big time. I'm willing to do whatever it
takes to resolve this matter, but I haven't a clue what's really
causing it. The only process, as far as I know, that touches these
files is Autoshare.

&gt; &gt;Attached at the bottom of this note is an example of what
one of the<br>
&gt; &gt;list files looked like.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; Do all of your list files look like that, if you open them using
a<br>
&gt; text editor? It's likely that something is corrupt on your disk.
Did<br>
&gt; you try installing a backup copy of your AutoShare preferences
file<br>
&gt; or create a new one? Are you sure your mail server environment
is<br>
&gt; fine?<br>
&gt;<br>
<br>
This machine is used for a lot of other things, and I have not
seen<br>
corruption anywhere else except the Autoshare list files.&nbsp; I
have other<br>
accounts on our EIMS mail server which have been working
flawlessly.<br>
<br>
I just cannot even imagine what is causing it.&nbsp; After I manually
repaired<br>
this file the first time, I monitored it, and began to see things
change<br>
again.&nbsp; Is there any value for an e-mail or subscriber name
which might be<br>
causing this?&nbsp; For instance, we have one user who's e-mail is in
the format<br>
some_name at [111.222.333 dot 444] format.&nbsp; I have another that had put
quotes<br>
around their name when they subscribed (e.g., joe.bloe at mac dot com
(&quot;Joe<br>
Blow&quot;..3)).<br>
<br>
I haven't tried deleting the preferences (didn't want to have to
reset<br>
everything again, and couldn't imagine how the preferences could be
causing<br>
this... then again, I can't imagine how anything could be causing
this).</blockquote>
<div><br></div>
<div>It happened again.&nbsp; After weeks of the list being okay, all
of a sudden two people got unsubscribed today that shouldn't have
been, and here's what I found in the Autoshare list file:</div>

Nearly have the list was just completely wiped out, while 1/4th of
the subscribers addresses were distorted.

Do you think removing the Autoshare preferences is going to fix this?
This is starting to hurt big time. I'm willing to do whatever it
takes to resolve this matter, but I haven't a clue what's really
causing it. The only process, as far as I know, that touches these
files is Autoshare.

If you think it's happening to one list only, then it may be either
the preferences for that one list or the subscriber file for that one
list. Either way, you want to push the brake, which is to shut down
both your mail server and AutoShare and then determine which
direction to go. As there appears to be barbage in the subscriber
file, you should clean it up or replace it with an acceptable backup,
and once that has been done properly, start up the server
applications again and run a few tests. If the subscriber file gets
corrupted soon afterwards, then it is needed to delete the list from
the preferences and recreate it. More than anything else, it's about
undoing before doing more.

Subject: Autoshare enhancements requests

I thought everything was fine with this particular list (the MacPascal
mailing list), but today I received the following digest (see end of post).
As soon as I saw this, I checked the list files, and the list file for
MacPascal was also corrupted (nearly 85% of the list has since then been
automatically unsubscribed).

Nothing else on the server is experiencing any strange behavior. The
regular e-mail comes through EIMS without any corruption. I will most
likely re-install the OS and start these lists up from scratch again, but I
would like to request some enhancements to Autoshare, in light of what's
happened.

1. Automatic backups of the list files. The backup would only be generated
when a subscribe or unsubscribe request was issued. In this case, I would
have been saved because the list files became corrupt from the postings.
There have not been any subscription changes to the list for months.

2. If possible, it would be nice if Autoshare would detect corruption in the
list files. In one experiment (when I was having troubles with the Mac
Guild mailing list), I retrieved an older list from backup, and upon first
glance, it looked in tact so I installed it. I did a test post, and the
list file was immediately corrupted, widespread. I looked at the backup
file closer, and found that one line in the file was corrupted (a dangling
character at the end of the line outside the parenthesis). I fixed that
problem, replaced the corrupted list file again, and did another test post.
This time everything was fine. It would appear that the corruption
propagates itself, so some kind of corruption detection would really be
helpful.

Thanks,
Bill

A simple process extender of type Subscribe can back up the list file
when a subscription takes place. The dilemma though is that if
another subscription takes place just afterwards, the backup is
corrupt too.

Data corruption, much like a glitch, tends to defy explanation. The
pragmatic approach is preventive maintainance by the human admin.

Having just entered the year 2001, I have been reminded of how
imperfect computers are.

Just a follow-up on my corruption woes...

I suppose it's human nature to always check the thing we don't want it to be
last. The problem with all the corruption was a bad hard drive. Norton
first tried to tell me indirectly (never reported a media problem, yet the
media check process would never complete). Then Apple's Disk Setup gave an
error during the "Test Drive" function.

Sure enough, as I tried to copy everything off the hard drive to another
drive, disk errors galore occurred in the area of the disk which,
coincidentally, contained all the Auto share files. I was unable to copy
the files off the disk (kept giving me a disk error). I tried stuffing the
files and then moving the stuffed archives, but Stuffit also gave me disk
errors. So then I used my simple little DropBin utility to convert the
files to binhex, and that ran okay. I then copied the binhex files over
with no problem, and they converted back no problem. The lists are now up
and running on a different disk now, and the corruption problem seems to
have gone away.

Subject: Error messages in Admin -> Lists related to list size

When examining a newly added list (i.e. clicking on the list in the
left-hand window) in Autoshare Admin -> Configuration -> Lists, i get
the following popup dialog:

"An error occurred while executing the script of <<class LIST>>
"lists": Unable to set some date because -11019. (-11019)"

All is apparently well after that, except: the subscribers' emails
(in the right-hand window) are truncated after about 1291 lines, and
stop displaying midway thru the last address. I am able to edit both
list and subscriber attibutes; the only apparent problem is that the
last 500 subscribers can't be displayed.

After experimenting a bit (with a new copy of the list, using various
subsets of the addresses), i see that it consistently cuts off in the
same place. Less than 1291 addresses (about 32k file size) = no
problem. More than 1291: the same error message.

I've tried increasing memory for both Autoshare and Autoshare Admin; no change.

Help?

For reference I'm running Autoshare 4.2 on System 8.6 with EIMS 3.01.

After selecting the list name and before clicking on the List button, I
recommend adjusting the From and Count fields. Last I checked, the Admin
did 500 or so subscribers using the default memory setting, and speed-wise
it may not be worth it beyond that anyway given AppleScript.

In any event, did you all enjoy this morning's MacWorld keynote in
QuickTime? Interesting that Steve Jobs didn't mention the Mac OS 9.1
update, was downloadable later throughout the day though.

Subject: Different Machine, Different Problem

I'm working a problem on a different machine now, with different mailing
lists. There's no bizarre file corruption going on this time, but I'm still
just as mystified.

The first symptoms occurred a week ago when Autoshare would just freeze
whenever a file would show up in the Filed Mail folder. I verified every
possible settings I could using Autoshare Admin, but nothing I did seemed to
fix this problem.

So I then decided, since these lists are relatively new and small, to trash
everything and start from scratch. So I trashed the Autoshare preferences
and the Auto folder, and even downloaded completely fresh copies of all the
Autoshare software. I then just created a simply list, going by the
documentation. The Autoreply worked (that was my first test). I subscribed
to addresses to the test list, and the subscriptions went through. So far
so good. I then tried the first posting, and Autoshare would get stuck
again (I saved the file that was in Filed Mail in case that might help).
From here on, it was all down hill. As long as that file was in the Filed
Mail folder, I couldn't even quit from Autoshare. Whenever I tried to use
Autoshare Admin, I'd continually get asked to Locate Autoshare. I'd locate
it, Admin would spin a wheel for a long long time (longer than usual), and
then I'd try to look at the lists again, and it would ask me to locate
Autoshare again. But I just did! ???

Once I removed the file from Filed Mail, I was able to get Autoshare to quit
using simple menu commands. But then EIMS went crazy because it was trying
to deliver mail to test.m, and since the test.m file never got created, EIMS
just kept looping. I manually created test.m as a copy of test and test.d
as a blank file, and that made EIMS happy. The e-mail that got processed,
however, did not make my e-mail client very happy. It was the test post
repeated several times (4k of text taking up 1200k of bandwidth).

In Admin, I can get a list view of the list now, but when I click on the
"List names" button, I get the following error: "An error occurred while
executing the script of iwndow "List Names": Finder got an error :Can't get
name of every item of container "Avalon:System
Folder:Preferences:AutoShare:Disabl". (the message was cutoff at that point,
but the file in question must be "Disabled Lists")

After the error message, it went on to the next screen okay. As I went
through all the various Admin settings, I got to a point when Admin just
froze. I had to force quit, and the application that was in the foreground
that quit was Autoshare. Admin then worked okay for awhile, but then froze
again. Another force quit, and Autoshare was the culprit once again. This
time the server crashed.

I'm out of ideas of what to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bill

I should add that, at this time, there is no file in the Filed Mail folder,
but Autoshare still freezes the system whenever I try to run it.

Bill, it looks like you need to check your machines carefully with
Norton and for third-party extensions. Something else is going on.
