That would be A in Misc Stuff (in the Admin, Command-J). Be sure to
let the mouse drift over both the title text as well as the text
field itself; the latter is used when more help text is needed than
can fit inside to the first balloon.

Although it isn't over until the fat lady sings, it is likely that
3.0 was too frozen to be changed at the time the bug was brought up.
This is serious business for people who rely on the unknown accounts
mechanism in EIMS 2.x and would like to upgrade to 3.0, because it
won't work; the SMTP envelope recipient is important, inasmuch
AutoShare then can't know for sure who the original recipient was. If
this concerns you, I suggest that you ask Glenn for a response on the
EIMS-L list.

Sorry my post was skimpy on details, but I had to leave town in a hurry,
and did not have the time to verify the specific field and letter to use.
Mikael has, of course, answered by now. As he points out, some of the
balloon help is behind the label, some behind the field. In prior
versions of the Admin program, some of the balloon help would not load,
but that seems fixed now.

Thanks Mikael, your tip works like a charm.

Y'know, as helpful as the balloon help is, sometimes being explicit does the
trick (especially with the number of separate windows the Admin has)!

If for some reason the balloon help doesn't show, increase the
preferred memory of the Admin by, say, 50K. I usually remember to do
so before uploading, but may have forgotten occasionally.

Yes. Unfortunately each balloon can only store limited text though.

(Alternate response: it looks like we have a volunteer for writing up
an explicit web page on the Admin!)

I think I have everything set up correctly, but when you send a
message to the list it isn't distributed. When people subscribe to
the list they get a message that they are now subscribed and I can
see their addresses in the List Serve folder. There are no files in
the Incoming or Outgoing mail folders in the EMIS folder. In the
EMIS mail folder there are several documents with the name incoming
mail 1, 2, 3, 4. There are several files in the Bounce, but nothing
in the other folders. I have created a Default document inside a new
folder (named after the service) in the Documents folder, and created
an auto-response account in EMIS. One thing is different than in the
tutorial and that is the mail folder is in the EMIS folder and in the
system folder. Should there only be one? I am using Mac OS 7.5 and
EMIS 2.2.

Any help would be appreciated. My students are looking forward to
using the system.

Hi,

I have a problem with AutoShare 4.1.1...

I've got an announcement list called youth-summit (I didn't name it), which
responds to subscription requests with the sub message but does not enter
the name in the list file. i.e. no subscription.

I've tried dumping it and starting again, dumping the prefs and rebuilding
from scratch, dumping the list file and rebuilding and all to no avail.

I've got a test list with all the same settings and it works fine.

Has anyone out there encountered this and do they have a fix?

That latter, the subscription part, indicates good news. There is
really no reason the former, the list contribution part, wouldn't
work when the latter does work. But as it does, you may want to see
if AutoShare has at all received the list contribution; if not, check
the EIMS account named after the list and configured like the EIMS
account named autoshare.

Yes, only one. For EIMS 2.2, only the one inside the application folder.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but have you forgotten to add

Thanks for the help. Everything is working and it was just a period
at the end of the account name in EMIS of the <list name>.m account.
Your suggestion to check the accounts is what led me to the mistake.

Thanks again.

I have run into a problem with listmembers with windows e-mail
clients (only tested with Eudora 4.3). When they try to send messages
with attached files, neither the messagebody nor the file is
transferred through Autoshare. You just get a message with only the
headers! If they send plain messages, without attachments, it works
fine.

Any ideas?

My setup is:
Autoshare 4.1.1 (also tested with 4.2fc1)
EIMS 3.0

I have verified that AutoShare 4.2fc1 and EIMS 3.0 are fine with
Macintosh Eudora 4.3.2b3, but not with Windows Eudora 4.3.2b3, as far
as list contributions with attachments are concerned. I'll look into
it. Thanks for bringing it up.

I would LOVE to have this "feature!" I hate it when an attachment slips
through, which often happens.

I have done some more testing with other clients. I used, for
windows: Eudora4.3, OutlookExpress 5.01 and Netscape 4.73. For Mac:
Eudora 4.3 and netscape 4.73.
No windows client were able to send attached files trough the
listserver without errors. Eudora and OE did not work at all while
Netscapes files got trough but garbled! Macclients worked just fine
and messages with files were recieved nicely on both platforms. The
only thing was that Netscapes attachments were renamed (e.g name.rtf
was changed to 3D"name.rtf").
I also tested to downgrade Autoshare all the way down to 4.0 without luck.
I am not sure if this was introduced with EIMS 3!? I used to run EIMS
1.3.1 before but am not sure when this problem started.

Subject: Autoshare processing HTML based email
From: Tony Moller <tony.moller at drcs dot com>

Is there a trick to getting autoshare to correctly process html formatted
emails (from Outlook Express Mac)?

Outlook puts this in the header:

Content-type: multipart/alternative;
   boundary="MS_Mac_OE_3041917728_29543164_MIME_Part"
Message-ID: <1253035157-31088857 at worldnex dot net>

> THIS MESSAGE IS IN MIME FORMAT. Since your mail reader does not understand
this format, some or all of this message may not be legible.

--MS_Mac_OE_3041917728_29543164_MIME_Part
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"
Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

so the first thing autoshare sees is the "> THIS MESSAGE..." and returns an
error.

Any help would be appreciated!

Mats (see the thread a few days ago) and I have been exchanging a
number of mails in recent days about MIME multipart list
contributions. Things are looking a good deal better now. A beta will
be uploaded later this week.

This particular line is placed in the message before AutoShare
receives it, so there is little she can do about it.

I have a question about mailbacks: What address are
mailback confirmations sent to? It doesn't seem
to be the From: address.

I have a Web form that people can fill out to subscribe to a
couple of my lists. This form generates a mail message to
AutoShare on behalf of the person signing up, putting the e-mail
address they provide in the From: header. If I don't have
mailbacks turns on, that's the address that gets subscribed.
If I turn on mailbacks, that's not the address to which the
mailback gets sent. It appears that it may be the envelope
From_ address (which is the account under which the Web server
runs under).

I can add the /=rfcfrom token functionality to mailback documents,
which should take care of it.

Subject: Two Questions - One configuration the other multiple messages

Hello
I have a question and a problem. Guess start with the easiest first.
How to you set up an announcement list that needs approval for subscriptions?

The next problem I can not seem to solve.
I have a list with about 5500 subscribers. This is an announcement
list. When a message was sent it went out 5x. In reading the SIMS logs
went to the .m address. Two bad address logged. About an hour later
the message again went to .m address. Or at least was distributed to
the .m addresses. This happened 5x.

Removed the two bad addresses. Sent an apology out. Went out fine.
Set the .m to forward to me in case it was somehow sending from some
other address. Watched for 1 hour did not see it again plus if another
message went to the .m address it would go to me instead of the mail
list. After 1 hour the message was sent out again. There was no
message forwarded to me it just went out again.

Users are complaining of getting "multiple" messages. I am culls on
this one. I am using a G3, AutoShare 4.1.1 and SIMS. Does anyone have
a clue how to fix this? Not happening on any other lists.

Thanks
Matthew

Subscription mail-backs are configured just like they are for a
regular list. In the Admin, Command-L, select the list, click on the
List button, specify S in the Mail-back field.

It must be a SIMS thing, unless Norton turns up something. The
message file processed by AutoShare is not moved to the Submitted
folder until the .m and .d files have been fully updated and the
message file is fully processed. I would run Norton to make quite
sure the file system is entirely free of errors, then run SIMS and
AutoShare one at a time for the full length of completing one test
message file to that particular list.

HI Again
I did not ask the question correctly. ;-(
I am trying to set up a private announcement list. So someone
subscribing to the list would need the listmasters approval.

Also is there a way to not have the subscription mail-back go out until
after the listmaster has approved the subscription?

Thanks

If the listmaster approves the subscription, no mail-back is needed.
Mail-backs are messages sent back to the would-be subscriber containing
a confirmation code that must be returned to activate the subscription.

Subject: AutoShare and Filemaker interaction

Hello,

I have looked at the Sample Process Extenders (insubscribe and esp. subscribe)

I am wondering if the following is possible:

I send a mail message out of a Filemaker record to AutoShare.
This message is a remote subscription by email.
Can I tell AutoShare to tell Filemaker, after the subscription is
done, to update a field in that specific Filemaker record.
This field named "SUBstatus" is a field formatted as radio buttons
with two values: yes or no, coming from a value list assigned to this
field.

I think it is possible.
The problem I see (with my minimal AppleScript experience) is to tell
Filemaker to update the "right" field in the "right" record.
TIA,

Subject: Remote administration errors
Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 15:50:54 -0400
From: Charles L. Martin <clmartin at theombudsman dot com>

I have run across several errors in remote administration of AutoShare
4.2b4. I suspect they may be related to a heavy load on the server.
Several times when I sent a "subscribe" message to AutoShare, it was
returned to me with an error message saying my password was not a valid
list command. Other times, before and after this error, AutoShare
responded appropriately. Similarly, several times when it did accept a
subscription, the last name of the subscribe was cut off, both in the
confirmation message and in the list. At other times it worked properly.
I don't know if this is helpful, but that's what happens.

The reason I suspect it may relate to the demand on the server is that
there were about 500 message in the EIMS out box at the time. I have
found that every week or so, I have to quit EIMS 1.3.1 and restart it to
get mail going out again.

HELP!!
AutoShare has suddenly stopped accepting subscriptions, etc. when a
message is sent directly to autoshare. Using the mail back feature. If
the message is sent to <listname>-on the message is sent out for
confirmation and works fine.

When sent to autoshare the message is sent out but when hitting the
reply it comes back with invalid command.
The subject sent from the -on address has
confirmation 78318929.

when the message is sent to autoshare the subject has
confirmation F.891191-1

I am using AutoShare with SIMS. The F number looks like it is coming
from SIMS.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

I've been using a happy user of AutoShare for monthes, but the new 4.2

reliable and valuable...

So before going into a mess with my server, or going back to 4.1.1 which I
do not wish since 4.2 bring improvements I need, I would like eventually to
share with other users. Have you also encountered stability problems since
4.2x?

	8.6
	ASIP 6.2
	SIMS 1.8b8
	QuickDNS Pro 2.2.1

This setup proved to be perfectly stable until now, even under unusual load.

I have come across a few cases where QuickDNS was the culprit. I
think there was a serious bug in QuickDNS 2.2. I seem to remember
that the Mice And Men folks tried to fix it in 2.2.1, but I'm not
sure of the outcome. Try restarting the server Mac and do some
stress-testing of AutoShare without QuickDNS running.

Thanks
I did find the B i Misc. Stuff. This fixed the remote subscriptions.

However if a user sends a message to <list-name>-on at domain dot com
everything works great. The mail back goes out user just hits reply and
then is subscribed.

Now if a user sends the message to the autoshare at domain dot com address a
mail back goes out however when the user hits reply the message is sent
back with unknown command.

I am totally clue less on this one.

I just tried this, and mine still works. Did you check to verify that the
list is still setup the way you want, with confirmation in the subject or
body?

See <http://www.dnai.com/~meh/download/AutoShare/Misc/>, notes included.

Subject: Mail just sits in Filed Mail folder

I had been running AutoShare for many years when seemingly all of a
sudden, launching it would freeze the whole machine. This happened
with version 4.0 and after I was trying to edit list settings
remotely on a PowerBook 3400 running OS9 (EIMS 2.2.2 and AutoShare
4.0 run on a Power Mac 7300/180). I also had problems quitting
AutoShare. Apparently the AutoShare application itself and not just
the prefs got corrupt somehow.

So I decided to download the latest AutoShare 4.2 and reinstall
everything, including replacing the preferences but of course,
keeping my custom AutoShare documents.

Now, AutoShare only sporadically processes messages in the Filed Mail
folder. There were 2 messages waiting to be processed by AutoShare
when I decided to reboot the entire server. When it came up,
AutoShare only processed 1 of those messages and now the other one is
still sitting in the Filed Mail folder.

Any idea how I can fix this? Also, I can't seem to get AutoShare
Admin running on my remote PowerBook (beachball icon just keeps
spinning and then times out and brings back the "Can't find
AutoShare" dialog box up). Could this be an incompatibility with OS9?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Kind regards,
Derek Tom

Subject: Can't run AutoShare Admin

Server: Power Mac 7300/OS 8.1/48MB RAM/VM on
Apps running: EIMS 2.2.2, AutoShare 4.2, Mac Restart, Timbuktu Pro
(Other than that, very clean system.)

If I try to run AutoShare Admin on the server running both AutoShare
and EIMS, I get the error, "Unable to cont because FaceSpan Extension
is missing, would not open, or is too old a version. (0)" after I
choose the FaceSpan Extension that came along with the AutoShare 4.2
package.

I had been running this same setup, except with AutoShare 4.0, for
nearly a year without any problems.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Kind regards,
Derek Tom

As follow-up to my previous post, with the AutoShare app running, I
cannot seem to choose any menu item -- including File->Quit! Choosing
any menu item does not have any effect other than the standard
double-blink of the menu item.

Please help!

Thanks,
Derek

You don't mention having run Norton or similar, but I would try that first.

Make sure that the FaceSpan Extension 2.1 is installed and that
QuickTime is properly installed.

Hi Mikael,

Thanks for your swift reply, as usual -- the absolute best tech support, ever!

Last Friday, after I had stopped AutoShare 4.0 from loading at startup due
to the system freezes, I had run Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) and there were no
problems. Today, however, after I had installed the new AutoShare 4.2 and
after I had tried unsuccessfully to reconfigure my lists, I ran NDD and
there was a problem with the MDB list. Right after that, I had to leave the
office and now I'm home. Will see how things go tomorrow when I
troubleshoot more in the office.

Thanks again,
Derek

I'm sorry... on the server, I had QuickTime disabled; enabling
QuickTime and QuickTime PowerPlug extensions fixed the problem.
(Previously, I was running AutoShare Admin on a remote machine.
Hmmm... that's probably why only some of the Admin functions would
work... QuickTime has to be enabled on BOTH the AutoShare machine and
the remote machine running AutoShare Admin, right?).

Thanks again,
Derek
