Yes, the filter hook is particularly sensitive to a default process
extender that does not include a filter handler. 4.2b3 correctly
determines if a given handler is in the given process extender
script, which prevents a no handler bogus response returned to
AutoShare from having any impact on the outcome of the built-in code,
e.g. the filtering module.

It turned out to be quite simple once I had looked into it. When the
change of month takes place, AutoShare creates monthly help files for
the preference set that she happens to be processing at the time and
then notes that she has done so, happily ignorant that when the next
preference set comes around a moment later, a separate note is called
for because there is a different batch of monthly help files here.
This has been fixed and will appear in the next beta to be uploaded
well before May comes around. Drop me a mail if you would like to
test it even earlier.

That's a lot :-)

You can do of it by adding a Begin Log handler to your Default
process extender. There is a sample Begin Log process extender for
picking up the numbers of users currently subscribed. And if you feel
particularly inspired, you can also use your Begin Log handler to
look at the log files to be mailed, which are in the AutoShare Temp
folder at that very time.

When all is said and done, AutoShare cannot log changes when
bypassed, e.g. if you add user entries in a list file using a text
editor.

3) is somewhat problematic, because what is a "problem"?

Subject: Help with multiple domains on EIMS 1.3.1
Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 13:41:18 -0400
From: Charles L. Martin <clmartin at theombudsman dot com>

I am still trying to understand how to use AutoShare to serve lists on
multiple domains hosted by EIMS. As I understand it, to do this I need to
create an "AutoShare Hosts" file, set up a bounce account for each
domain, and configure multiple preference sets. Unfortunately, I simply
don't understand how to do these things. My previous questions, and
answers I got, do not bring me any closer to understanding what must be a
simple thing. Here are some specific questions I hope someone can help me
answer:

1-the AutoShare Hosts file: What is the name? What is the content? The
documentation says: "Assuming that the EIMS default domain is used with
the AutoShare bounce address, the domains in the AutoShare Hosts file
must match the remaining EIMS domains for list
contributions to work properly." Since the default domain is
mailroom.theombudsman.com, and the other domain I want to send mail with
is mail.troop175.com, is "mail.troop175.com" all that needs to be in this
file? Or do I need everything in the "Server names" list in the EIMS
preferences? Or everything but mailroom.theombudsman.com? Or something
else?

2-When creating a bounce account for mail.troop175.com, do I use a name
like "BounceTroop175@troop175.com"? I assume "Bounce@troop175 dot com" will
not work since I already have a "bounce@theombudsman dot com" account, and
EIMS does not let you specify a domain to use with an account. Am I
missing something here?

3-What else do I have to do? I think I understand about creating an
@<domain> folder in the Autoshare preference folder, then selecting the
new preference set, editing preferences, and changing back to the default
before quitting Admin. Is this all I need to do?

I apologize for filling the list with all these questions, but I just
feel like I am missing something.

Hi all,

I think it would be nice if we could use the /=include token - and probably
other autoreply tokens - not only in custom autoreplies documents, but also
in standard autoshare documents.

Of course.

A bounce. AutoShare now counts bounces. But total number of bounces
is not as important as number of addresses that bounced.

And a tip for future: Keeping number of bounces for every address can
help very significantly, especially if it is included in the admin
review. With such feature, I would be able to look at the review and
see, for example, that many users with a particular domain have
problems. Then I would suggest them to change their Internet provider.

I desperately want to use /= in all my AutoShare documents. Most of
my documents include standardized text on the request and/or
available commands, plus standardized text on the list itself.
/=include lets me keep these text snippets in their own files, and
make the documents just series of /= tokens, which makes it *much*
easier to keep everything correct and up-to-date.

I just checked, and it is enabled (at least, I have "l" in List
Stuff) for all lists (except for Qpopper, which is now set as well).
It's actually in the default List Stuff, and almost all lists use
that.

I can't get remote admin to workat all now. Everything I send comes
back with "invalid command: " and then the password, as if I sent the
wrong password. But it is correct. I also tried adding "b" and "B"

have a blank list-specific List Stuff, to use the default List Stuff).

Subject: An Interesting Filter Problem

Reply to: An Interesting Filter Problem
Recently this one has come to light. I'm wondering if anyone has a =
solution:

We have two mail servers (running EIMS 2.2.2) which we will call here main.=
mail, and secondary.mail. We have a series of listservs (called here =
list1, list2 etc) each of which contains the membership for a given area =
of the business. Each list is maintained by a tech person in the =
appropriate building. It is best not to limit postings to the membership =
because persons from one building sometimes have need to mail to all of =
the folks in another building. =

On occassion someone needs to mail to all of the people in all of the =
buildings. So, we created on the mail server a group (called here =
masterlist). A mailing to masterlist gets sent to list1, list2, list3 etc.=

Now spammers have discovered our lists. So, I need to somehow filter =
senders. =

Since all of the acceptable senders should be in our domain I think I =
could manage this with some sort of intermediary address sending the mail =
to a particular folder with preprocessing where the domain of the sender =
is checked before the message is either forwarded on to the actual =
listaddress or blackholed. =

In sum: how can I set up a means of mailing to lists where mailings need =
to be open to non-members but only to an acceptable group of non-members? =
The acceptable group can be defined by the domain of their sending address.=
  =

I've been trying to handle this with a before processing script which =
checks the list name and then the domain of the sender. If it is a list I =
want to filter and the domain should be filtered then I just delete the =
message before Autoshare gets to it. But it doesn't seem to work, and I'm =
not much with Applescript.

Any suggestions out there???

I'm in Chicago these days (snowy outside like Groundhog Day morning) with
little more than telnet access from an old Windows box (sigh), so I can't
offer much in terms of specifics until I get home, but you would pick up
the kSender or kRFCfrom (or whatever I called those parameters) and then
simply compare your domain with the end of the address to see if it
matches. If it doesn't, then delete (or something like that) the message
file. There is probably already a sample which comes pretty close.

Here is a plain vanilla script, which deletes any given message file,
whose From address does not end with a given string.

property myDomain : "mydomain" -- change!

on idle
   return 300
end idle

on PE Before Processing (aList)
set kFolderPath to item 1 of aList
set kFileName to item 2 of aList
set kRFCFrom to item 5 of aList

set myFilePath to kFolderPath & kFileName

if kRFCFrom does not end with myDomain then
     tell application "Finder"
       delete (alias myFilePath)
     end tell
   end if
end PE Before Processing

Thanks Mikael,

I notice that the line

on PE Before Processing (aList)

Doesn't compile in my Script Editor. I assume it needs to be replaced =
with:

on «event AuBPaUBP» (aList)

Correct??? If not do I need to update the Script Editor (currently ver 1.=
1.3)?

Is there any way to let AutoShare create usable index for web archives?

This is how my index looks right now, and it's really hard to find
something there:

        Archive-1-Apr-2000.html
        Archive-1-Dec-1999.html

I think I don't want too much, even just sorting by date would be a

I'll try that, thanks.

However, the indexes _are_ sorded - they are sorted alphabetically,
but that's unsense if the date is in the format [D]D-MMM-YYYY.

The above makes it YYYY-MM-DD.

Subject: Announcements as HTML (yuck)

I have a client who is now insisting that their announcements go out
as HTML encoded messages.

My application allows the client to enter their message in a
<TEXTAREA> window on a form. The form's action points to a WebCat
template which will send whatever is in that <TEXTAREA> as an e-mail
message to an AutoShare address. (The client could send an e-mail
message from their e-mail program too, but this is the way we have it
working now.)

Can AutoShare handle the html e-mail? I guess what I mean by that is
as far as AutoShare is concerned this is just some text, right? Do we
have to do anything special in the processing of this message to tell
the receiving e-mail client that what follows is html and not plain
text? Are there anythings I should lok out for? Any gothchas? Does
anyone know of any reference URLs for more information?

Thanks,

I am not familar with this particular setup, so I can't comment. But
I would be interested in seeing such a message file from the Filed
Mail folder.

I probably can't say that a list contribution in HTML will always be
fine, but I am interested in if it isn't. HTML code is plain text in
the body, but there might be the issue of the Content-Type field in
the RFC header.

One of the public Pensive lists was just spammed. Accordingly, I
have added restrictions to the lists. I had been reluctant to do so
previously, because this makes it less convenient for people to use.

Effective immediately, only subscribers can post. I realize how
annoying this can be, since you may be subscribed using one address,
but try and post from another. No one likes having his or her
messages returned because the address wasn't subscribed. One way to
mitigate this is to subscribe all your addresses, and set all but one
for NOMAIL.

I have a related question. I made this change a while back, but I still
have archives in the old and new naming convention sorted together. This
is a little hard to use. Is there any way to get rid of the old naming
convention?

Subject: Trouble setting up announcement lists

I need to create a couple of announcement lists.. They each need to
opearte from a different address. I have set up those addresses in
SIMS and that end of it seems OK...

The problem I am having is that I need for each list to have a
different list admin and that list admin will have a different "from"
address when they send a message and that list admin will not
necessarily be one of the subscribers.

I have tried putting the list admin's e-mail address in the E-mail:
field from the LISTS-->List window for the list.

1. Can AutoShare have different announcement lists with each one having
    a different list administrator?

2. Can AutoShare handle an announcement list where the list admin is
    not one of the subscribers?

3. What am I missing to make this work?

Thanks,

There is a section in the documentation entitled "List- and X- RFC fields".

In the Admin, Command-L, optionally select a list, click the More
List button, see the balloon help for the Suppress RFC headers field.

The list contribution that I just sent had a turnaround time of less
than two minutes.

Each list can have one list-specific listmaster.

Different from the other admins? Or different from the admin person's
normal e-mail address?

Sorry, no. It's hard to administrate a list if you're not subscribed anyway.

Just wait for future archives to be created.

Manually :-)

You can script it, but even the manual approach should be quick. How
many archive files do you have?

Were is the setting to tell AutoShare to accept the "from" header
instead of the SMTP envelope value?

I want to set up different announcement lists each with a different
admin. I want to specify the admin email address for each list...
OK... I'll make sure that the admin is subscribed to the list too.
Now the problem is that when I use Eudora to send a message I get a
X-Sender in the headers and I think the SMTP envelope is different
then the from address. I want it so that the from address contains
the admin's address. I can configure this in eudora, but autoshare
says I'm not the admin... it's looking at the SMTP envelope.

Sorry to be so scattered... it's late... I'm on deadline... and I
think I have your attention for the moment.

Thanks,

Sorry... a message I sent earlier did not appear in my mailbox for a
couple of hours. I should have investigated further as to the exact
cause of the delay.

In the Admin, Command-J, RFC From (vs envelope).

I don't know about Charles, but I have 198 files in the archive folder...

And I am not really sure what I should edit.

I have AutoShare setup to create both text and Web archives. I have
one "Archives" folder, which contains one folder for each list, and I
have also Web archives folders setup for some of the lists. What
should I edit and what will be updated automatically?

Every subfolder of the "Archives" folder contains:

1) Many files named "Archive-<date>.html
2) Many files named "Archive-<date>.text
3) Many files named "Archive-<date>.toc
4) Many files named "Archive-<date>.txt
5) Files "Current.html", "Current.text", "Current.toc" and "Current.txt"
6) Files "Digest.text" and "Digest.txt"

The Web archives folders contain copies of the "Archive-<date>.html"
and the "index.html" files.

So, again the simple questions:

1) What should I rename?
2) What should I edit and how?
3) What should I delete?

Sorry for asking this way, but I am not much sure about it from the
documentation.

I have problems with list-specific remote administration. When I send
a command with the syntax "<password> review list <listname>" and the
password is the list-specific password, I get a message that the
password is an invalid command. What can be the problem?

I am currently using AutoShare 4.2b3. I did not have this problem

Whoops, I have just discovered that no remote administration works,

I think that surplus the word "list" in the command

Hello,

what's the best (and easiest) way to include a personalized greeting into a mailing. For example I would like to send a mail to an annoucement list and every generated mail should start with

Hello <name>,

were <name> should be replaced by the name of the recepient stored in the listserver files.

Do I have to use a Process Extender?

Best,
